Looking to buy my first spyderco. I am interested in the flat grind version of the chinook. Are there any reliable websites that offer the flat grind chinook? Have any of you bought from savsons or knifetree? I am considering buying from:

I'm not sure if the one from knifetree is a flat grind version. It does say c63gp3. Is that how I can tell? Also, if anybody has a chinook, please tell me your experience. Would you pick a chinook flat grind over an emerson cqc series for SD? Why or why not? Thanks.

I've never dealt with either of those dealers, so I can't say. I know these are reliable:

Self defense is based on personal ability more than on a particular weapon. Chinooks or most of the Emersons would all do well, depending on how comfortable you were with any given knife: handle/grip, blade style, lock.

All else being equal, I would prefer a lockback, but I am happy with my many liner locks as well.

I should have mentioned, although I prefer to stress other aspects of self defense, I think the Chinook is one of the all-time great folders. It was designed by a recognized expert in self defense, and he's been upgrading the design all along.

I ordered a knife from Savson, took it out of the box, decided I wanted to exchange it.....I sent them numerous e-mails, no response after a few weeks I gave up. I decided to keep the knife and not push it too far, but it was frustrating that they never returned my messages.

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

New Graham is excellent but if you look at my three links you will see that Knifecenter, also an excellent source, does beat them by ten bucks on this item. It's no good just chasing the lowest price, but to have a small list of reliable dealers and find the one that gives you the better price on a particular purchase is legit.

I have purchased from all three of the sites that ESAV posted links and they are all great. The deciding factor is price.

Droid's Deals has treated me well and they have their phone # on their website. Phones beat the hell out of sending emails. :D

BIG help, when problems arise. I've come across otherwise attractive websites that diid not have an easily found phsyical address. Are the knives coming from Kansas or Argentina? Couldn't tell from the website.

if you're trying out a new website, try out that phone number. Give them a call and ask if the knife is in stock. You might be surprised 1) if you get a rude answer or 2) you get a clueless operator or 3) you get an ambiguous "they usually are", etc.

On the other hand, I saw a knife I liked on a site I hadn't heard much about at the time, ... New Graham. I called, Mike got on the line himself, and we talked knives for about a half hour! He is not just reliable, he is a real knife knut.
