I've discovered my niche on the forums! I've been a member for a few months, now, but I just discovered this page of the forums. I like knives to use - not to put on a shelf or destroy:eek:!

Back to the point of this post...

When you're on the river (fishing, canoeing, etc.), what knife do you always have with you?

My vote goes to the Benchmade 160 Tether Knife. It is a light neck knife, meaning that it's always on hand, wont fall out if my pocket turns inside out in the water, is usually above the water, and will drain out if it gets water in it. It has the kind on short utility blade that you're likely to use for most river-related tasks.

Other knives I like are the CRKT Neck P.E.C.K. or the A. G. Russell Woodswalker knife.

Great minds think a like, Blackhawk kalista, around my neck with a fire kit and ceramic rod on the outside of the sheath. Chris

If I were to choose a neck knife it would have to be an ag russel woodswalker with a setup close to rb's. My own preference however (although a little more tactical in appearance) and not a neck knife, would be a sog seal pup, nice kydex sheath which when mod can be worn horizontally on the belt towards the small of the back. I've tested mine out a little and so far its held up and is pretty good with corrosion.... also the serrations while not ideal for all survival sit. are handy should you have to cut tethers or webbing quickly if you dump..And if you end up having to stay on the bank for a bit it is robust enought to baton with and even accomplish light chopping (and the profile of the blade is thick enough that you can choke up on the spine if need be for intricate work)

I have recently bought my son the Mora on the left of the pic and it is designed for water use,it is called something like a River knife !

First generation Benchmade model 100 RiverRescue knife tethered and alwaysmounted on my PFD. What knife I carry in the back pouch varies. Last year it was a Frosts 6" Sportfishing knife.

Right now is my BenchMade Mini Grip.
I think I need one of these though:

I always used one of the Gerber River knives but those new Spydercos in H1 are going to be hard to beat. I sure like the general utility shape better over the short stubby blades on the Gerber but those little Gerbers have such neat convenient sheaths and hold up so well that I have always had at least one around on the water. They are cheap too so if you lose one its not a big deal. I note that some of the adds for these say quality made in the USA now but my river knives have always said quality product of Italy on them. I don't know the steel but I've left them out in water overnight and they never rusted or even changed. The flat end one is great for diving but the other spear point looking one is great for camp and food prep stuff as well as some general utility. They are small and light weight but short blades.

My Bark River Wolf River is my river knife. What a cutter!

Rupestris,

I'm intrigued by your post:eek:.

Where did you get the pictures, and where can we learn more about these knives?

Man I wish those weren't hollow ground......

I have since found the above Spyderco knives in the forums at the Spyderco website. The thread was about a show they did in Amsterdam. The knives above are the Aqua Salts. SKUs will be FB23SBK/SYL & FB23PBK/PYL. There was no pricing information, and no production schedule that I noticed. Per the thread, it did sound like they would be produced, but I didn't catch when they would be available.

Thanks for fillin' in the blanks hikeeba.

I found the pic here: http://www.equipped.org/shot_show_2007_knives5.htm

I've avoided serated blades but I can definately see where something like this would be useful as a boat knife/river knife.

Looks like mid-'07 for a release date.

Chris
