Best self defense folder

Best folder... Hmmmmm, Franchi Spas 12 comes to mind ;)

I'd say the MT Amphibian just because I like the specs of the blade, The width of it's spine gives me confidence in the blade. It will big enough for the job without being too big to carry every day IMO.

The Emerson Karambit would be my first choice. I haven't received mine yet though. :grumpy:

Other than that, or any Emerson, my first choice is definetly the Spyderco Civilian. :)

My first choice in folders would be the Camillus CUDA Maxx Bowie. There are bigger ones, but the Maxx is near the top in all self-defense attributes. And it carries better than anything even close to its size.

I'm with Roshi on this issue.

Let's face it, most folding knives are from 3 to 4 inches. They all pivot, and some pivots are better than others.

To stay in the terms of this debate, I don't think it matters what knife you are carrying, as long as it is sharp enough to slash, or strong enough to penetrate.
(snip)

I see things the same way. In the end, the best knife is the one -you have-. A folding knife is a serious last-ditch option, so I don't think any other criteria than dependability and familiarity count in this particular case.

Wiser men than I have said that the .22 in your hand beats a .45 left at home...so I think the griptillian in your pocket beats the supertaclitesaber in the knife drawer.

Heck, sometimes all you have to defend yourself with is a PEN :).

I have to agree with Glockman about the Vaquero Grande. As much as I love the crkt kff and bm afck (my daily carry), the VG is the most aggressively designed folding knife I've ever seen, both in terms of function and looks. I just don't carry it often because...how the heck are you going to justify THAT!!

Ok, when it comes to self defense, I'd much rather rely on my CZ75!

If I were to only carry one knife that's legal in my area for defense it would be my Rinaldi L.E.O. If I had to carry only a folder it would be my Al Mar Sere 2K.

I recently chatted with a friend who is a police sergeant and he said that if you have a CHL (concealed handgun license), DO NOT carry a knife for self defense! He told me that if you have a knife on you and you choose to draw your firearm and shoot the BG, you will be in a heap o' trouble with lawyers... He said they will ask why you didn't use the knife before the gun since it would be a lesser degree of force. He told me to ditch ALL knives when carrying a handgun in Texas. (less liability) I'm just letting you know what a friend of mine told me was good advice... (names not mentioned to protect, blah, blah, blah)

If my friend was wrong, sorry! .. I just wanted to pass along what he told me.

hmmm, not so sure about the liability q's if ya live in tx, i have never heard that, i carry mine for a tool anyway, and if ya are in the right i dont know why they would question that, has no legal precedence i know of, but, that said..........

that said go for a crawford kasper or perfigo, or a BM AFCK or EKI I&I tanto or CQC8 imho, or a maxx 5.5" WOULD BE GOOD TOO

AntDog:

I'm not sure where that Texas Sgt. got his information.

A knife is considered a deadly weapon no less so than a firearm.

Most states regulate both under their dangerous weapons statutes.

There are less than lethal [mace, stick, hands] but the knife is not considered any less lethal than a firearm.

If that were true the courts would expect everyone carrying a "grandpas" nail nick opened folder in their pocket to use that first in a self defense situation.

A knife is carried as a tool first and foremost. It may be pressed into service to defend with like any other object.

If it were true [and I'm not saying it is or not],
the state would be saying they expect the knife you are carrying to be first a defensive "arm" and then tool second.

I haven't seen any laws from the states I have researched for classes [maybe 20] that says the state has that expectation of it's citizens.

Ichabod is right, there is no hard and fast answer to this question. Remember it already has 1 major weak point, the pivot.

Anyone who has been in a knife fight will tell you that it is not something they would do again. Given a choice I would rather be shot than cut. Got the scars to remind me about how bad getting cut can be and after 20 years they still shock people. Especially those who think a knife fight is a one or two cut affair.
