Best Sharpener for someone not into knives (yet)?

If you want something easy... I tried out the WorkSharp Combo Sharpener... it is super easy to use. (I called it the sharpener for the person who doesn't really want to sharpen). The belt runs at a slow speed, so even though it's powered, it doesn't over grind the edge, and chances are he'll never even have to change it (unless of course, he starts liking it and uses it more). If you show him that most of the time, the edge can be brought back with a few swipes on the ceramic... and it's small enough you can stash it, with nothing to set up... just pull it out and use. Probably one of the easiest sharpener's I've tried out that works well.

Perhaps the lanskey turn box crock sticks ? I've considered this for the same reasons but haven't tried

That's a tough one. I was going to recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker, but then I saw your comment on it. Perhaps a pocket-sized ceramic "v" sharpener would be best. It will allow him to touch it up. Then when he visits you, you can give it a real sharpening. I would avoid the carbide "v" sharpeners though. They're hard on a blade.
