Best sharpening equipment with $125

Bench stones (I prefer DMT diamond hones) and an angle guide for occasional re-setting a bevel have worked for me for decades.

boy,with a $125.i would go strait for the edge pro copy and get the real EP-stones! if you dislike freehand!this is a grate system,and a least i would pick up a sharpmaker unit,ether of these makes sharpening easy,if you go the freehand way! pick only the best stones you can get your hands on,wish you good luck.

DMT Coarse diamond plate and 1 micron diamond compound on a strop. These two items will allow you to do a lot with very little. The coarse DMT can set bevels, repair damage, and sharpen to a scary sharp edge if you finish with light pressure. Stropping wth 1 micron diamond after the coarse plate removes any remaining burr and takes the edge to a level of sharpness that will rival most any edge. I particularly like this combination for highly wear resistant steels because it provides them with an awesome cutting edge that's easy to maintain.

You could add a DMT fine or E-fine but it would be best if you started with one stone and mastered it before adding more.

A double sided Japanese stone (like a Cerax 1000/3000 or 1000/6000) pluss a strop will also be a good option.

Of course; if you want no lubrication, Japanese water stones is probably not what you want...
