Best sharpening system?

Is there any reason you can't put a piece of mouse pad and sandpaper on a blank and use the Edge pro to get a really nice "precision" convex?

That would be interesting to find out. :)

my sharpening system:

sharpening is quick and easy ;)

I have been in the market for a sharpener also. The Wicked Edge looks easy. Have you trird that on a blade like the ZT300. Thats the only knife Im affraid to sharpen.

The extreme opposite of the convex edge is the chisel edge, which is best for running a straight line and making good slices.

I've never had a chisel edge give me straight cuts. There is always a tendency to pull to one side. Conventional V-grind seems to give me the straightest cuts. YMMV.

As for the cheapest place to get an Edgepro, check the For Sale subforums here and at other knife sites. If you want brand new I've never seen more than a $1-$2 difference between stores' prices. I got lucky and mentioned a bunch of site errors a major knife retailer had and they gave me a $10 coupon. I used that towards my Edgepro.:thumbup:

I have both the Edge Pro and the KME. The KME is much smaller, can be used while sitting on the couch watching TV and does NOT require that YOU hold the knife.....a distinct advantage...IMHO. Holding the knife, ala Edge Pro, is fatiguing and is a source of inconsistency as it is difficult to maintain the EXACT edge throughout the sharpening. This source for error is eliminated with the KME. KME is ~ half the price. Can take the KME to work easily.

My two cents.

I am very interested in this KME sharpener, I've never heard of it. I've been wanting an Apex system for awhile but it was so much money. I have a Sharpmaker right now and really don't like having to hold it at a proper angle myself, I can't stay that precise after awhile and it gets really sloppy.

Are there any more comparisons of the KME vs the Edge Pro anywhere?

A Gerber diamond crock stick and a DMT fine grit Diamond Mini-Sharp paddle.
Light, compact and easy to carry around.

Knife is held on the left hand while the right hand holds the sharpener angled according to gut feeling and visual checks. Sharpener is then drawn across the edge in a somewhat freehand fashion. Is this style of sharpening considered freehand?

OT: (I have been lurking for 3 1/2 years mostly because I own only a few knives and reading bladeforums when I can to improve on my knife knowledge. A Victorinox SwissChamp, MOD CQD Mark 2 combo-edge, Gerber Mini-Cover combo-edge and an Al Mar Shrike is what I have)

I would think it would be hard to beat a jig and a good assortment of wheels including a paper finishing wheel.

just my 2 cents and I know some are going to call me stupid but I bought a Lansky diamond deluxe and while good at putting a different profile on a blade I couldnt really get the edge I wanted, so I used the "stones" like a crock stick, just use one hand to prop them up at the correct angle and use the other hand to draw the knife.. I put a hair popping edge on a blade that was abused and left untouched for four years (not one of mine of course) you could literally put it to skin and not even scratch (something again I didnt try first hand but saw done by the owner) after I finished with it took about 30 min , i could save my arm........... other than this I just use a lansky crock stick box to touch up when needed.

I ordered the Edge Pro Apex #4 kit. Should get it on Friday. Will let you know my opinions on it once i sharpen a couple of blades. Thanks for all the info.

Whats a decent price to be expected to pay for the Edge Pro?

On eBay you can get the basic system for about $165US. The seller doesn't seem to have the Apex 4 system at the moment, although I've seen him selling it in the past.

Remember that the great thing about the EdgePro is that you can make your own stones by grabbing some 25mm/1" aluminium from the hardware store, cutting it to length (I use a woodwork box that allows me to cut the end at 45°) and gluing on stones from someone like Congress Tools. You can also find stones on eBay going up to about 10,000 grit for fairly reasonable money (the plastic backing isn't really a problem). To sharpen recurves just get some thinner stones and stick them on 12mm/0.5" aluminium backing. I made up a set that goes up to 1500 grit, which is enough for my usage.
