Best shoulder bag...

It seems clear to me that most of the members of this board are probably twice my age so there are very distinct taste differences. I went ahead with the Oakley Sandbag and hopefully receive it in a week or so (they are backordered).

The other bags seem durable to me but a little too Teddy Roosevelt African Safari to me. I want to be able to walk a few miles with my bag and not fall over from carrying a suitcase with strap :)

Anyone have any good leads on a good shoulder bag that will fit my daily carry stuff...cell phone, keys, flashlight, maybe a novel...etc.

Everything I see looks more like a purse than a shoulder bag.

Problem is, when the bag looks too tactical, is made of nylon, or is too, well, useful, then it isn't classy enough to wear with a sport coat or a suit, should the event call for dressier clothes.

I have several nylon shoulder bags, but my better half discouraged me from taking one of them with me when we went out for a night on town.

Not classy, she said. And she was right. They are suited for everyday carry when I'm wearing jeans. They aren't made for carrying into fine dining establishments.

I then searched for, and found, a shoulder bag that IS classy. I found it at Wilson's Leather. It's called the Traveler's Bag. Not the roomiest bag I have and not the most useful, but I can wear it with my black sport coat and make it look natural.

Agreed...but for a computer geek like me. A rugged black bag made out of balistic nylon hanging from under my armored Vanson jacket as I ride to work on my motorcycle, works perfect. I have bright blue hair, tattoos and ear rings, which don't exactly scream for me to wear my nice charcoal suit to often. But that is rare enough that I don't need to carry my EDC with me anyway.

Wondering how I can work in a corporation and look the way I do? It's easy, as I explained to my boss, many moons ago. My look says, "I understand the computers better than anyone else here, so can get away with this". I should probably write a book on how to get away with murder in a corporate environment.

Evil Overlord,

Your description brought a bag company to mind that may have some things that interest you. Crumpler. They are made in Australia and make messenger bags as well as camera bags etc. I had the opportunity to check out some of the messenger style camera bags and the word Overbuilt does not begun to describe them. They do not look tactical at all. I am not sure if they will have just what you want but they certainly deserve a look. The materials and construction are first rate and much tougher then most of the otehrs I have seen. Their unconventional bags may be just the fit for you. The description of you on the motorcycle instantly bought their bags to mind.

The monkey on the web site cracked me up! But the Aggott bag looks perfect! And it only comes to $69.7925 including shipping. I might have to go with these guys. It would be a good match to my big Timbuk2 bag. Great link!

Your description in the prior post of yourself and not taking things too seriously brought them to mind. I mean any company that names a bag the Big Weenie amung others has to have a pretty cool outlook. The Camera bags that I looked at were very impressive. The padded comparments were divided by very robust padded dividers. The front panel was not only buckled but had velcro under it as well. It was not the usual 1" wide strip of velcro either it had a panel of velcro that had to be 6" X 8". No way that bag was coming open unintentionally. The materials used were all very sturdy and much heavier than most every maker in that catagory. Post back if you get one and let us know what you think.

PS I dont work for or own a Crumpler bag I was just very impressed by them after having the opportunity to look some of them over.

Does anyone know where to get maxgear online - except for TAD?
I would like a fat boy versipack in woodland camo, but unfortunately TAD just sells the black, OD and desert camo versions....
Thanks, Ralf

I love my Maxpedition Fatboy that my wife got me for Christmas. If you do a search for Maxpedition in this section, you will find alot of info on them and some good pics of what people can carry in them. I posted how and what I carry in mine - I LOVE IT!

This is what i use for carrying my camera. It has a removable soft insert to protect the camera. When you want to use it for something else just take it out and it becomes a normal shoulder bag.

Used it while travelling a lot.

I gotta second the vote for Tumi. I have a compact computer brief (as pictured) that I use daily and, though expensive, this is far and away the highest quality piece I've ever owned. Quality of workmanship and materials are top notch. You won't see any verbaige like, "imperfections add to the character..." in their stuff. This thing even has pull tested break-away zipper pulls. Their customer service and warrantee is second to none as well. Highly endorsed if your looking for the last brief, bag or travel luggage you'll ever need...
