I tried this in a different forum, but there wasn't many responses. Thought this might be a more appropriate place. Any of you know where I can get a good quality small folder with Mammoth Ivory scales/handle? Thanks.

It would help if you were more specific about what style of folder you were interested in, but for starters A.G. Russell is very reputable and they have a selection of them (not all are "traditional" though, if that matters):

AG Russell mammoth

Found another:

Thanks for the reply. I've seen both those links and checked out the knives. I've taken some interest in some of them.

Basically, I'm looking for any type of folder(slipjoint, lockback, linerlock, etc.) with a Mammoth/Mastedon Ivory scale/handle. It can be production but I might also be interested in custom. Where can I go for that?

And do you have any input on this knife?

You might want to check out some of the custom knife dealer websites.
I don't know who has what you are looking for, but a few you might consider are True North Knives, A.T. Barr's customknives.com, Nordic Knives, Plaza Cutlery, Arizona Custom Knives, and the Custom Knife Gallery of Colorado.
Using google to search for what you want might also be helpful. You could also contact some of the custom makers that sell through the knifemakers' forum here and have one of them make exactly what you want.

BTW, I'm not pushing any of the websites that I mentioned above, they just happen to be places I go to drool over the eye candy.

Because you didn't post here first, I assume you're not looking for a traditional slipjoint, necessarily. In that case, Chris Reeve makes a very nice Gent's Folder, the Mnandi, a frame-lock in Ivory (elephant and mammoth):

I've used a Sebenza for years, and handled many Mnandis. They have some of the tightest tolerances in the business.

If you are looking for a slipjoint, I bet most of the makers could custom-build you a very nice ivory-scaled knife. If that's the case, post back about pattern, size, blade preferences, and we can steer you to some good makers that fit your requirements.

Good luck with the search.

The Mnandis are nice. I saw a small Classic Sebenza with Mammoth Ivory scales that I liked better.

And speaking of slipjoints there's one from Tim Britton.

In terms of what exactly it is that I want, I don't know. That's why I'm here asking. I'm keeping my options open to suggestions from people who know about these type of knives. So any input is appreciated whatever they may be.

How much do custom folders like slipjoints with Mammoth Ivory scales go for anyway? And are they good EDCs?

Hey, if you're not going to bid, I'm pretty tempted! :D

I'll be watching that one.

It might go pretty high, though. I'd guess near $100. Good luck!

Daniel

I can't say that I'm not going to bid on it. But if you're interested in it to, go for it. Good luck as well.

OK, I'm going to make a suggestion out of left field. A knife is a really personal thing, even more so for a user than a safe queen, because it not only has to look right to your eye, but it has to feel good in the hand, AND more importantly, feel good working. The combination of aesthetics, feel, and feel under pressure is what makes the knife such a personal choice.

Start with the blade(s). I like clip points with long pulls or a nail nick out near the tip. I like Wharncliffe/sheepsfoot blades and also small pen blades. I could live my whole life with just those 3 blades because, in my hand, they do what I require of a knife. Others might like the tip strength of a spearpoint, for example, but I don't use a knife that way so I don't. I could live with one clip point blade, or with a combination of 2 or all 3 of the above blades I mentioned.

Pattern/handle: I like smaller knives that disappear in the pocket. The 2-7/8" Peanut is great. It is ridiculously small, yet the profile is angular so it is easy to hold for me. I like a 3-1/4" equal-end Senator. It's longer than the Peanut, but each end tapers (width AND height) and both bolsters are rounded, so if anything even though it's longer, it carries better in the pocket that the peanut, plus the center swell makes it easy to handle. My Stag Senator has a large clip and small coping (like sheepsfoot) blade. I also like the mini-trapper with a clip and wharncliffe blade. It's on the large end of size for me, and if I could get the blades opposite, like a muskrat, and get them on the same spring for thinness, then I would be in heaven.

So for me the knife is more than just the combination of certain blades, it's how the 3-dimensional nature of the handle mates with your hand and the way you use those blades. These are the knives that work for me.

Back to your question, if I were looking for a traditional folder, and I wanted it to be made out of a more expensive exotic material, I would want it to be just the right combination of blades and handle shape. I would first experiment with cheap versions of what I thought I wanted. You can get knives really cheap on the used market, here at BF or locally where you live. You can also get very decent knives like Rough Rider for $10-15 and try them out. Get plastic scales, get heavily used and scratched. It doesn't matter. Carry them around for a couple of weeks or months. Find out what speaks to you. Work all the bugs and indecision out by using them, then you can buy/commission a knife in that pattern with the quality and ivory you want. You could probably even resell your practice knives for what you put into them.

If, on the other hand, you want a knife like the Mnandi--you need to either take a leap of faith (I did on the Sebenza and it worked out for me), or get to a knife show, BF gathering, or see if another knife knut lives nearby and you let you handle the real thing.

As for cost, customs would start around $150-200, plus more for additional blades, exotic materials (I'm thinking another $100-150 for ivory), plus more for a really really good maker. Ballpark.
