Best size for EDC fixed blade?

It's good to see a lot of people are still carrying a fixed blade on a regular basis. =)

Smallest I've carried are about 4" overall. Largest I'm comfortable carrying is about 7.5" overall. Bigger than that and it'll just end up in my bag. Blade lengths of about 2" to about 3.5". Carry method varies, though I try to keep most of them concealed. Exception to that is the neck knives, which people don't seem to notice anyway. Or don't recognize them as knives, possibly.

I EDC a Becker BK15 on my right hip, stock sheath, tucked into my right front pocket most days. Sometimes I add a BK14 scout carry in it's stock sheath wrapped with paracord to make it belt friendly. Been considering getting an Azwelke sheath for the 15 so I could scout carry it too.

Get the AZwelke sheath. I got one for my ESEE 3. Threw a large tech lok I had laying around on it, and carry it at 4 o'clock, vertically. Great sheath.

I like the ESEE 3, or Izula 2 for fixed blade EDC for daily tasks.

I also like to carry my ZT 0121 same spot when I'm not at work.

This is my favorite carry if "I needed to get wet" fixed blade, a large Bawidmann Pogn:

In response to the OP's Q "What is the best size to carry?", that will depend on
1) where you live. i.e., what's legal
2) What will you GENERALLY be doing with it?

For each person that will be different.

In my case, I live in Texas, live and work on a farm but also work in towns and cities. The maximum legal public carry blade length is 5.5" and single edged.

I carry 3 fixed blades every time I leave the farm:
1) - BK11 with a 3.25" blade
2 & 3) - Kabar 3/4s with 5.25" blades- usually 2 of the following - 1254/1255/1256/1257

Most of my daily use of these blades is -
- opening boxes, packages and letters
- cutting plastic straps on bundles of lumber, pipe, etc
- cutting string, rope, line
- opening sacks of feed, fertilizer, sand, mortar mix, cement
- cutting open various packages of food (NOT food prep - that's other knives)
- whatever needs to be cut that is not in one of the above day-to-day evolutions

I also use them as substitutes for my bigger "farm-use" blades - BK4,5,6,7,9, Kabar 1217,Machetes when I happen to not have one of them handy - An example of this is removing the head from the rattler I came across in the back yard yesterday as I walked to my car. I was leaving the farm for the "big city" and had already replaced my bigger blades, so I "made do" with the 1257. Since it was only about 19" and stretched out, not coiled, I simply had to hold it down with a booted foot and kill it. Had it been coiled, or in the 25"+ range. I would have shot it.

As a hiker or a woodswalking companion blade, though, I think the Adventurer II might be ideal.

Tom- Exactly what I ended up using it for!
A great backpacking buddy as I always like a FB with me outdoors in the bush. Although it now is getting sent to new home tomorrow. :D

I prefer a fixed blade having at least a 5" blade but no longer than 12" overall. It's legal here if it isn't concealed.

For me 3" or less blade and around a 4" handle is the perfect EDC size. I've carried that size for almost two years now and it works great for office carry in a pocket sheath or even in camping situations worn on the belt in a horizontal carry sheath.

Went camping for a week few months ago. Never needed anything else apart from an axe.

For those that carry a fixed blade knife on a daily basis. What size is best for EDC when it comes to a fixed blade? Is there a particular type of carry that you prefer?
