Looking for a nice small folder. Don't mind about blade quality, as long as it's not total crap. :) Something small and light, and fairly thin. I like the Boker Subcom styling, but not sure where to get them. Are there more knives with that look (big blade, beefy looking) like that for under $40?

The Subcom is rather unique in its design. There are a number of other very good choices in small folders, but most look more proportioned like scaled-down versions of larger knives, rather than the "little tank" look of the Subcom. If you are trying to find the Subcom, New Graham has them, as do other popular retailers.

I was going to recommend the Kershaw leek until you mentioned the beefy blade part.

I'd say look into the Spyderco Natives...they have a beefy blade and very nice steel (S30V) and are in the $40 range on ebay....also the Kershaw Mini-Cyclone which has a little lower quality steel i think but it does have assisted opening which is always fun.

Yeah, I love that "little tank" design. Can you link me to some other retailers that carry it?

I found some on eBay for $30 shipped (the Subcoms). Wondering if there are others like it before I buy one. :)

The Subcom is a great little knife for under $40.00 and it comes out of the box sharp!
Matador-

I would rather buy from good dealer than e-bay

The only other knife under $40 I would recommend is Spyderco Native, but this is not "nice" knife, this is work horse with one of the best stainless steel available on the market today and great ergo. Native is classic, live legend, one of the best Spyderco’s designs.

The best little knife in the world is the Opinel.
You can get them in various sizes and have three or four for that price...they cut VERY well, not all that fancy and you need to dremmel out a notch if you wnat one hand opening (a thumb stud would be nice but i've never done that)

The knife should be pretty easy to obtain:

You might also like the Blade-Tech Mouse, which can be found in various flavors at New Graham (linked above).

Thanks!

I can't tell.. is this one brown or black? http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BO589

This one is definitely black: http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BO586

Not sure if I like the all black - that steel blade looks too good to cover with the black coating.

I'm a bit confused.

You want "small and light, and fairly thin" and "big blade, beefy looking"?

Kershaw Storm. I'm more and more impressed with this knife every week.
Coating isn't great, but the spoon clip means this knife stays where you put it, unlike my beloved and favorite Delica. Knife feels substantial in the hand, solid grip, opens quick enough (manual) and... oh yeah... it cuts:) Mine was delivered under $40.

Sorry.. I guess I meant to say that I want a big, beefy blade when compared to the overall size of the knife. Like the Subcom.. the blade is big and fat looking, and I like that.

Thanks, but looking for something different. :)

A couple of weeks ago I gave my father a Gerber Fatty. That is a beefy little knife. Don't let the advertised measurements fool you. I like small knives and the Fatty seemed huge so I gave it to Dad. He's a professional gardener so I figured he'd get some use out of it. I believe the blade steel is probably 440A. It was about $25.

If you like slipjoints try a Case Sodbuster Junior. It might fit your needs.

I have one of these ... blade isn't as robust as the subcom, but it feels bigger than it is in the hand ( but disappears in my pocket). It's assisted opening, has a locking blade with a safety and is razor sharp. They usually sell for around $30-39
