Took the 4 year olds fishing yesterday. Ran into the mart of wal to get bobbers and saw in the camping section some predator carnosaur looking type knife...long with no tip.thought it looked perfect for offing snakes around the pond or river...didnt buy it because it was 30 bucks and figured i already have similar enuf implements but got to wondering what yall use for snakes when trekking about.

I use a scythe when I encounter them while I'm working in the yard. Cuts 'em clean in two. Shovels work well too.

If I'm on the trail, I give them a wide berth and avoid the drama.

(I don't like to have to kill 'em, but if they're on my yard or the edges of our woods, I don't want my wife or dog encountering them...so they go. I never kill non-venomous snakes.)

Usually I just avoid them, but I remember reading that a lot of guys on Texas road crews, etc.... favored heavy hoes for areas where there were a lot of rattlers.

I would avoid the venomous snakes unless they are in your living space. Snake bites can be ugly.

Why do you want to kill snakes?
In my case, as I was stepping out my cellar door a snake(that looked a lot like a big copperhead) struck at my leg and missed. Went back in and grabbed my .38 and quickly dispatched what turned out to be a Brown Watersnake. I felt bad, but that guy got too close to the house and crossed a line in the sand when he struck at me. Brown water snakes look a lot like Copperheads and I think a lot of them are killed by mistake.

We're supposed to have Eastern Diamondbacks around here, but I've never seen one.
