Snake knife? Nope, way to close. Shovel works great. I have tried .22 and .38 snake shot and settled on .44 shot. Bigger is better.

I never kill a snake if I can avoid it, but if necessary, a .38 revolver with bird shot really does the trick.
In Huckleberry Finn Huck tried to prank Jim w/a severed Rattle Snakes head and almost kills him.I'm like you, I've always loved reptiles....
But when it comes to protecting your dogs & kids, sometimes you're left with no other choice. I've been going up to Northern Idaho and working/playing every year for about the past 15 years now. This last year the rattler's really seemed to enjoy coming up and resting in front of the several doorways around our barn- 2 really close calls (came within inches of getting nailed 1 night walking out a door), it was a miracle that nobody/or any of the dogs got bit. One 2 occasions I used my Topps pictured and other time my rigging axe, but each time I had them pinned down with a shovel or other ranch tool.
Whatever you do, don't mess a round and get cute with any poisonous snake. One single vile of anti-venom for a rattlesnake bite runs about $12k. Do the math with this unfortunate guy:

Does this include spiders?I do kill rattlesnakes to protect my kids and dogs but I generally love animals including snakes. Good to hear the OP is not indiscriminately killing snakes.
Yes tjat tops is precisely the type of thing i sorta consideringI'm like you, I've always loved reptiles....
