Best snake dispatching knife

I never kill a snake if I can avoid it, but if necessary, a .38 revolver with bird shot really does the trick.

I'm like you, I've always loved reptiles....

But when it comes to protecting your dogs & kids, sometimes you're left with no other choice. I've been going up to Northern Idaho and working/playing every year for about the past 15 years now. This last year the rattler's really seemed to enjoy coming up and resting in front of the several doorways around our barn- 2 really close calls (came within inches of getting nailed 1 night walking out a door), it was a miracle that nobody/or any of the dogs got bit. One 2 occasions I used my Topps pictured and other time my rigging axe, but each time I had them pinned down with a shovel or other ranch tool.

Whatever you do, don't mess a round and get cute with any poisonous snake. One single vile of anti-venom for a rattlesnake bite runs about $12k. Do the math with this unfortunate guy:

In Huckleberry Finn Huck tried to prank Jim w/a severed Rattle Snakes head and almost kills him.

The part still showing is only about half of him. The other half was blasted into the ground with a 20 ga. shotgun.

I leave snakes alone unless they are venomous.

I've never met a snake I've needed to kill. Venom is precious and costly for a snake to waste. They don't just bite to be a jerk. Yes there are some that are aggressive. I've had a couple of pants-pooping run ins with cottonmouths, but none of them seemed to want to really bite me. Don't screw with a snake, give it a path to get away, and most likely you and the snake will part on good terms with you being unbitten and the snake alive.

We don't have big strikers around here like rattlers, so I put snake knives right up there with bear guns in terms of "cool to talk about online but utterly impractical in real life" when it comes to my neck of the woods.

But seriously, I leave them alone. They are just trying to live their lives, so unless a snake (or anything, I just don't like killing anything) is a direct threat I let them go on their merry way. Besides, they eat the real problem animals!
If I have to kill one, I use a shotgun so that it is safer for me and as humane as I can be for the snake. Shot is better than bullets so you don't miss and there are not bad ricochets. If I was going to use a knife then I would want a big fixed blade.

I would think any inexpensive fixed blade knife duct taped to the barrel of a 12 gage shotgun barrel would be fine. Load up the 12 gage with some bird shot pull the trigger and no more snake issue.
