Saw think thread below on MP3 players and thought I would post. I have a Creative MP3 player that I have never been able to get working  I was wondering what software you guys use to convert WAV files to MP3. Freeware is first choice, but I would pay for some that works easily and well. Thanks

The latest LAME encoder plus the RazorLame GUI is one of the best solutions you can find. The LAME encoder does an excelent job with 256kbps.

Real Player 10 works great for converting file formats. They charge a $20 one time fee for the plug-in.

LAME is the best. If your ripping cds, the ripping software is just as important for decent Wav files. Grab "eac" ripper from http://www.exactaudiocopy.org/ and the LAME encoder. The exactaudiocopy ripper can be set up to retrieve the cd info from feedb.org, rip the cd into wavs, encode and write the MP3 tags, all from one program in two steps.

This guide is an excellent step-by-step walkthrough of setting up EAC and LAME to rip CD's. A friend of mine used it to rip over 30 Gigs worth of MP3's to her computer and they all came out with superb quality.

Enjoy!

Thanks for that link. Very informative!

You dont want to change WAV to MP3 - mp3 to large as you have a small media player that wouldn't be a good thing. converte them into WMA, it it's windows, or if u use itunes AAC.

www.download.com and search 'converter' and use the one with the most votes, thats what i done. Best of luck.

Huh? Let's see:

1. Under 96kbps, WMA beats MP3 (but they are very close). They are both bad though, which is expected given the compression. This kind of bitrate is NOT suitable for music, no matter what Mikrosoft claims about the 64kbps WMA.
2. At 128kbps they are very much the same. Still not good enough IMHO.
3. At near-CD quality (192-256kbps) MP3 wins.
4. MP3 is FREEWARE

So, why wouldn't he want to use MP3?

to add to flava's remarks..
I prefer mp3 to wma until they sound identical to me (very high bitrate)

my suggestion:
dbpower AMP music converter is a great program but it is not freeware.
maybe you can find another way to get it for free though.

WMA & ACC smaller than MP3. when i converted all my mp3s to AAC i saved about 25% space, i was very pleased - not to mention you can't 'really' tell difference between all the different formats.

if you transcoded from mp3 to aac, you lost even more data than just cd to aac because mp3 and aac use different lossy compression algorithms... but if you can't tell the difference then don't worry (or get some better headphones and start worrying ;) )

OGG should be considered for ideological reasonas at least.

Gives a good scientific comparison between many formats.

While WMA is a good format, it has been designed with built in locks. Not something I encourage.

Ha, thanks 4 the advice, I think I'll just leave MP3 as MP3 from now on. I was actually planning on new earphones (starts 2 get worried) - ah well, I listen to led zeppelin, metallica etc.... so theres probally not to much sutble tunes to miss

Have you looked at Itunes? Free, and you can convert and store Cds as mp3s. Am I missing something here?

How good are these three Windows Media Player plug-ins? Only 170kb?!? I wonder how well they work. Anybody tried those?
