Best Spydie for backpacking

I'll add my vote for a Delica. I realize the OP said he'd prefer something longer for some sense of protection; at that point I'd recommend getting your hands on a hiking staff for "reach out and touch someone" on the trail. I'm not talking about a collapsable, fiberglass-and-carbide-tipped "hiker's poles", normally sold in sets of two, but a real, honest-to-God, solid wood, Little-John-vs-Robin-Hood staff! I picked up a nice plain Ash one at a RenFaire several years ago, it's solid, about 5' and it's a hefty security blanket for places that don't allow more. Add a metal cap on the end so it doesn't splinter or mushroom from use, and you're set! (IMO, when Yogi and Boo-Boo are rummaging thru your pack, any knife shorter than a machete is gonna feel woefully inadequate!)

FRN Delica or Pacific Salt for a folder, but the Spyderco knife I would choose for backpacking is the Aqua Salt fixed blade.

Has the OP made a decision yet?

I thank everyone for all the replies, great insight! I am going to get the military as my primary backpacking knife. Now, I just need to decide between the camo which is really cool looking or the more practical for hiking orange. I already have a waved endura that I am also thinking about dedicating to time in the woods. Thanks again.

IMHO, taking a camo knife into the woods sounds like a great way to buy yourself another knife :D

Orange is the only way to go. Camo is an excellent way to lose a knife in the woods.
