Best steel for 4"-5" backpacking knife?

Looking around the Bark River in A2 seems like the best all around deal.

I find myself moving away from the tactical look. I used to love tactical knives but lately I feel I am driving a hummer in small town.

I think you will be happy with any of them. I personally dont have any Fallknivens yet, but I do love my Barkies.

As of late I have been using O-1. For a all round steel it seems to be better
than some of my knives in A-2,D-2, and 1095. It stays sharper longer than
the others. I have been comparing them against each other for kitchen and camp chores.
I just got some 5160 in for making up some more of my Pathfinders:D But before I make any up in 5160 I am going to make some more up in O-1 ( I have enough O-1 to make up 8 more Pathfinders before I need to order more steel and we are forcasted for rain for the next few days so no tree cutting:( so my plans are for making knives:D) I prefer 5 inchs over the 4 inchs for all round use. I have been using my Pathfinder as a ( What If I had One knife Deal.) From kitchen chores to making fuzz sticks and splitting rounds of wood for my fires, to making paths through the timber in which I work. O-1 in a 5" blade seems to be working very well so far me. The Pathfinder has become my every day carry so far. And with its Blaze Orange handle if I set it down or happen to lose it while out and about it is easyer to see and fined than my other knives that have a tactical look.
Get a knife in O-1 and give it a try maybe it will be your perfect steel for your outdoors adventures.
Well that is my 2 cents worth.

I've got a few Barkies in A2 that I like a lot (Aurora, Fox River, Bravo-1), and an old Marbles Plainsman in 52100 that really rocks as a game knife.

Sicily how much for one of your 01's like that? What are the specs on it? It looks like a few of the canadian bush knives I've seen afield. Has a nice old time camp look to it, though i'm not a fan of pinned scales, screw set or Bussue style ok.

Not sure what this means, and perhaps it just applies to my experience, but I've noticed on the Knifemakers For Sale forum there is a heck of a lot of O1 available, but rarely do I see it as an offering from production companies. Perhaps its corrosion resistance tends to make the bigger companies shy away? Anybody else notice this?

I think 06 is an even better steel for a bush knife, but i rarely see it offered either? Scott? Anyone?

Yeah, but tactical is cool, and chicks dig it, and by carrying one you just might get a hummer in a small town.

Oops. Did I just type that out loud?

I just purchased an F-1 but the handle is a bit small. So I am back to the search for my perfect knife. The F-1 is damn close.

I agree, which is why I just purchased a Fallkniven NL5 Idun (4" blade). http://www.fallkniven.com/nothern/us-nl5.htm

I'm 6'1" and the handle is perfect.

I put snowseal on the leather handle and, presto, it will never rot and it's grippy as hell. Won't chip in cold weather either.

Go for it.

I just sent an email for a quote from a steel company. If I can get some O6, i'll make a test piece. fromm reading the HT data, it's not much different then O1.
