Best steel for a beginner

So I am just starting out making a few knives and I realize the first couple will probably go straight from the shop to the trash, so I would prefer to use a little bit less expensive steel, but at the same time, I also don't want to put a ton of work into a knife, become attached to it (like I do with most things I build) and then be stuck with a low quality steel. I was thinking maybe d-2 or something? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Not D2 but how about 1080? Have you read the stickies at the top of this page yet? You should. A whole lot of help there. Frank

What Frank and Stacy said. 1080 or 1084. Fill out your profile. Read the stickies. Keep it thin and keep it simple.

Thanks a ton guys. I am working through the stickies. I thought I would clarify though, I think I will send the blade to peters HT, so I am not so concerned with the ease of heat treatment on this one, more workability and price
