best steel for a knife you abuse

Just to add. There is a knife throwing sub-forum on here if you want to browse it. Link

I think that the Cold Steel True Flight is your best bet in that category. I would use a file or belt sander to put a finer edge on it. I would replace the handle wrapping with some Dayglow orange cording to make it easier to find the knife when it bounces off into the brush.

+1 on the orange paracord, I've managed to lose throwing knives in my own, well mowed backyard more than once. These were the no-handle throwers about 8 inchs OAL. If you miss and they manage to bury themselves in the ground they're darn near impossible to find sometimes.

Try a lawnmower---I typically find my lost knives in the spring with the mower.

The one exception is my Beretta Loveless hunter. I used it to dress a deer and laid it on the open tailgate of my truck. It was gone the next morning---I'm pretty sure the neighbor's dog grabbed it (it was covered in fat) and drug it off somewhere. I kept expecting for it to turn up embedded in a tire or propelled through the air at high speed during the first spring cutting, but it never did show up.

Yeah man up and make your own our of a lawn mower blade. your friends will think you are cool. no i am not being sarcastic

The best stainless steel for abuse and still easy to sharpen is 420 in my opinion. It gets a lot of negative remarks but if you have a knife made with it it is solid, durable and easy to sharpen. I have many knives with just about any steel represented and my three most used are the 440C, S30V and 420. I have chipped the 440C the S30V is hard to get razor sharp and the 420 has never had any issue and is by far the easiest to sharpen to razor sharp.

420? hmmm... Buck? :)

Get an Ontario Spec Plus USN-2 Survival Knife...

5" clip point blade made of 1095 carbon steel and it's overall length is 9 1/2"..

You can get one for under $50.

I have the Camillus re-issue of the original WWII 'Ka-Bar' style "Marine Fighting Knife" or whatever but it has a 2" sharpened swedge and a steel buttplate. Except for the leather handle being round it is a fine field knife and throws pretty well. 50 bucks or so will get you one or even less for a cheap copy. My guess would be 1095 steel blade.

"CPM-3V, you will not be able to break or damage this knife from Zero Tolerance"

can't wait for this one to be destroyed! hey, we all know it's way over the top but it's still fun to watch (as long as i'm not paying for the knife!)

between him and cliff, i think i'll take their word for it!

i think it's funny seeing high-priced knives (many of which i own) out-done by lower priced jobs, re: durability, toughness etc.

let's face it, say what you want about cold steel or the thompson guy but in the final analysis they ARE pretty damn tough, at least according to his tests. and i have no reason to think that they are biased.

hell, i don't know but it is fun to watch!
