Best steel for a user Paramilitary 2 edc?

Looking at your sig line, it's also worth noting that S110V is extremely corrosion resistant. Lance has mentioned severa times that it's the best he's seen apart from H1 and the like.

i do appreciate the corrosion resistance comment regarding 110v i didnt know it was that good
i wonder how well the m4 would do with a forced patina?
it wont see salt water, ive got a whole collection of h1 blades for that :-)

I have two m4 customs form Phil Wilson. I use them several days a week cleaning fish and they are constantly covered with fish guts and blood. They both have dark patinas but they never get oiled and they have never shown any rust issues. Zero. And I live right on the ocean in the tropics. As long as you don't mind staining and are willing to occasionally wipe your blade off after use you will be fine.

I think good ol s30v by Spyderco is outstanding. Its a good mix of edge retention and corrosion resistance for me. I carry an s30v spyderco to work every day, which is outside in southern Louisiana where I pretty much sweat for 12 hours non stop at work. And I rarely have to even wipe down the blade, or really sharpen it. Maybe a slight touch up now and then but thats really it. I think people get a little wrapped up in super steels to appreciate how well Spyderco does s30v and VG-10, which were considered super steels at one point.

S30V is just as good as it was 5 years ago when it was praised as a super steel.
i find it funny this even has to be stated. I see a lot of people lately knocking s30v, i guess it has gone out of style. Its a great steel especially from spyderco. My military s30v out performs my buck s30v with Bos heat treat.

The M4 is new on the market and is VERY available on the Exchange, as ANIB by individuals. Also, on Aug 3, IIRC, it will also be available in carbon fiber for about $220 or so...from a different BF sponsoring dealer.
And, yes, this is a GREAT steel, although not stainless. But a little care and it will be fine.

I haven t had much experience with s35v in user knives. I've heard that it has the good qualities of s30v but is tougher (less chippy). Does anyone like s35v?

Thanks for this direct first hand experience, I do not mind staining at all, as long as actual pit/rust/cavitation isn't effecting the edge retention/quality I don't care what the blade will look like just how it performs...

I've found that the M4 has been really great since I've been using it. Zipping through old dusty cardboard boxes and dusty rope at work, I haven't had to touch it up yet. It doesn't feel razor sharp to the touch anymore, but it's still cutting well without hanging up. I tried forcing a mustard/ketchup/onion patina on the blade, but it's not taking too well. I guess time will naturally patina the blade.

I don't think you can go wrong, really. Each steel has it's merits. Personally, I really like the edge that I can put on my all my Spydie (and Benchmade for that matter) S30V blades, and that goes for my PM2 S35VN blade, too...That may be because I've used and carried those more. I also have an S110V PM2, but I haven't really used it enough to form a solid opinion yet.

You must be luckier than I am. I was carrying this one while working in the yard, in about 50% humidity. I have put oil and wax on it in the past, maybe not recently. I spotted the rust a week after carrying the knife and it did clean off easily.

Totally agree with this, well said...

What did you use to clean the rust off?

I had some metal polish I had bought from the local auto parts store. It took the rust off pretty easily but didn't have much affect on the rest of the patina.

To be fair I've owned and regularly used this M4 blade for several years. I've never been real conscientious about taking care of it and previous to this have only had a couple of little flyspecks on it and no change in the patina. This is the first real rust.
