Looking to start a new project. I want to build a bush craft style knife for my grandson. what would be the best steel to use for stricking a spark with a ferro rod ? My guess is 1095

I would tend to agree. Any high carbon steel would be a safe bet. Super steels and stainless might not be up to the task as well. Plus a lot of bush craft knives are high carbon so it's a win win!

For a ferro rod, the type of steel is completely irrelevant. All a ferro rod needs is a hard sharp edge. It can be done with certain types of glass even. Steel choice makes no difference.

With hardened high carbon steel you can even do it the old-fashioned way with a piece of flint and some char-cloth. Very fun and traditional way of making a fire.

Ok, Thanks guys. Something romantic about a hand made knife from a old worn out file. I think the little guy will like it.
