So I think I'm going to try my hand at a knife in the weeks to come. I live in an apartment, but have a small work bench I put together. I have a vise, drill press, a dremel kit and a small band saw that may be able to cut metal.

Is there a forgiving steel that I can get to get me started? I will be using files only aince I do not have a belt sander and don't want to get in over my head.

Thanks!

Get you a piece of 1084 from Aldo the NJ steel baron. Relatively easy to work and even better, easy to heat treat at home.

Yep, 1084
You're in Cincinnati? I'll give you a piece. It's thick though. I have some 1/4 and some 3/16.
You can have a piece while you wait for your order. If you do order some, you may want to go 1/8" or thinner.

Yep! Work in blue ash and live in eastgate area. I don't mind the thickness of that. I prefer beefy knives for some reason. Thanks so much! I'm excited to start this project

Pm me and we can set up a meet

I have a class to teach in Ohio tomorrow. I can bring it with me. Would you rather have 1/4" or 3/16".

I love this place...

Thanks Josh and good luck with your project vPetrell.
