Best steels for pocket knife

14c28n is great, stainless, easy to sharpen and has reasonable edge holding. Aeb-l is really good too.

Asking what is the best steel for a pocket knife is like asking what is the best car in the world. There is no really correct answer. There have been many great suggestions post here and my contribution is S30v or S35v steel. I have knives in both and I really like those steels. They are reasonably corrosion resistant and reasonably easy to sharpen using ceramic sharpening systems.

For a well-balanced stainless steel, I'd go with a powder steel like M390, maybe 62 Rc. It's stainless and has excellent wear resistance.

You could also go with Elmax, say 60 Rc. It would would be a bit tougher than M390, with a bit less wear resistance. Still, an excellent all-around stainless steel

My favorite would be Vanax SC at 60 Rc, but it is difficult to find. It is super stainless, has excellent wear resistance, takes a killer edge.
