Best Stockman-ish design under $50?

This is my first post, and I basically joined to ask questions and give answers, so I'll start out with a question. What do you guys think is the best Stockman(deleted) folding pocket knife (Or similar design, as long as it has 3 blades and at least one of them is a clip.), and why? I'd like to keep it under $50, cuz I'm a broke guy. :( (The only prior experience I have with the stockman is a small Buck folder that I can't find anywhere on the interwebs. If you can identify it for me on a side note that'd be great. It's got a deep red finish, sort of like the chairman series, but it has brass bolsters, and the clip blade has "BUCK 373" on it. I have no idea where to find a picture of it either. :o)

That icon you used is not a man scratching his head in thought. It is called a "jerkit" and it means something entirely different (and quite rude). I am certain that was not your intention, so I removed it. --Frank.

My favorite commonly available sub $50 stockman is a Buck 301. I have other nicer stockman knives, but the 301 still gets carried a lot.

The Buck 373 was, if I remember correctly, a knife made in China and sold by Buck.

Case Stockman? I bought a yellow one with CV steel for 38 bucks. Overpaid by a few, but it`s one of my old dealers, and I am loyal to him.

Other than that the Buck 301/303 are reccomended. May not be the prettiest out there, but they are built like a tank. Like the Buck is the T34 and the Case is a Sherman.

the buck 371 has far superior finish, opens and closes like a bear trap, and looks good enough for pure display. on the other hand, that's all it'll do as the blades are bad.

my just-arrived buck 301 single-pin has scary sharp blades. but the finish is bad, and opening and closing is disappointingly anemic.

i'll stick with the 301.

as far as 301's of recent manufacture and anemic actions, I've had better luck with the yeller ones than the black ones

The Buck 301 Stockman comes favorably recommended for the price. Just curious though, how about the Stockmans in Charcoal Dymondwood* finish in comparison to the Black Valox* and Yellow Delrin*?

*Made in U.S.A. and each can be had for under $30USD.

Try Boker large stockman, look around I think I paid $34 for mine but that was about 7 years ago, nice handle scales, I really like Bokers carbon steel. Boker has a good price point, lots of value, just look around dealers are all over the place with Boker prices I've noticed.

Before I complicated my life purchasing more knives this was a constant companion at work ( construction and other trades) and play, fishing, hiking camping. Boker makes a good knife after years of use it is still perfect.

save a few more pennies.....

i recently picked up a Queen small stockman for $62, couldnt be more pleased. well maybe if it were sharp out of the box idve been more pleased, but once i got it up to my standards it is a pretty stellar little knife.

Another vote for the 301 or 303 depending on your size preference. I've had better luck with yellow and the Dymondwood scales than black.

How about a yeller handled Case Sowbelly? Available in both carbon and stainless steels. Just a couple dollars over your budget.

Both medium (3.5") and large (4 1/8") stockman frames are in your budget. Case and Buck are you best options for US made.

Go on the auction sites and look for an older Schrade 34OT that's made in the USA. It hands down my favorite stockman.

I'd recommend a Böker Germany in carbon too, just be patient on various on-line places, you'll find a good one for a reasonable price.

I'm waiting for my first Buck Stockman Yellow at the moment, I've heard so much good about them that I need to give them a chance.

Don't ignore Rough Rider for that matter, some of their stainless Stockman knives (Stag, Bone, delrin) are very tidy knives, some unusual sizes on offer from them. Very low price but quality very acceptable.

All the best, Will

Well, there are some nice recommendations. You can find some very nice stockman at that price range. And to make it more difficult to choose - try Carl Schlieper, Solingen. I don´t know the prices in the US, but here in Germany the small yellow delrin stockman are available for roundabout 45,00 $ (carbon steel blades).

You can´t go wrong with Case, Buck (US made) or RR (china made). About Böker I can´t say anything. They are curiousely not availbale here in Germany, though Böker is a traditional cutlery manufacturer

I´m sure you can find a nice stockman in your prize range.

There´s something I want to add: Buck makes knives that are built like tanks. Case stockman are also very great knives. My Buck 301 never needed just one drop of oil to work without problems.

Kind regards
Andi

:o OH, thats what that icon was!
I think you'd like the  icon.
Humppa- Really? Boker isn't available in Germany? That's strange.
For under $50, a Buck 301, 371, 303 (American made version of the 373) and the 373.
Any Case stockman with CV and yella scales should come in under your price limit, as should the brown synthetic with stainless line and the American Workman line (if they even have a stockman in the AW, never seen one)
Bear and Sons could come in a bit under $30 but the QC is hit and miss
With a little snooping you could very well find a good Queen or vintage USA made Schrade under $50 as well.
Hope you find the one you're looking for, good luck!
