Best Stockman-ish design under $50?

Well, I feel obligated to comment on threads that go this deep in Buckdom....

The differences in the USA made Buck stockmen are internal along with external. Here is a thread I did over in the Buck forum that has blade well photos for anyone interested.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/970048-silly-Buck-301-pin-question

The old black sawcut version has it's scales moulded onto the liner and bolster unit. It is held on by pieces of the scale insides being melted in milled out holes to form a sort of plastic (valox) rivet head. The front liner/scale has one less 'rivet' than the back in the area behind the shield. The Yellow, Black Dymondwood and Red Chairman DW have liners that are solid and have scales that are riveted on in two places. The black sawcut has only one rivet showing ,where the knife is put together when the bolster pins go in. That rivet holds the springs and is visible at the bottom of the scale. The other models do not show the spring pins.

Ok, that explains some differences......
Lots of times, more than I like, there is polishing media in the guts of Buck folders. If you have a slow closer, do a hot soapy water wash and mineral oil bath, clean all that up and lightly oil and then see how it folds.

I continue to live for the day a Buck folder has a true warcliff blade, Dami blade or upgrade steel blade. I am not holding my breath.

Several years ago I earned a forum slap on the hand penalty for berating off shore made knives and was specifically grousing about Bucks imports. Buck is making every effort to make knives in the USA and those knives (and country) I bashed at the time have proven all along to be very well fit and finished folders. So you won't hear me say anything now, in fact I carry one fishing all the time. I support you if you if you like them after all it supports Buck and their survival is important, just on the slim chance I will eventually get to see a 301 or 303 with fancy blades.

Crazy, send me an email at my user name, medicevans at gmail dot com. Let's talk about a stockman. :)

I need a stockman. The only ones I have seen locally were Bucks, but the edges looked like they had been applied with a bench grinder by a drunken man.

Go on the auction sites and look for an older Schrade 34OT that's made in the USA. It hands down my favorite stockman.

+1

Got one at a yard sale for $2 with a broken in half main blade. Did a little work on the grinder and have a knife with one medium and two small blades, This ugly little knife seems to get dropped into my back pocket for beating at work a lot. Gotta love that Schrade carbon.

Also have a 330T in good shape as a back up.

A popular online vendor, that is not site approved, has the 3347 pattern stockman in CV for $38.99. If you look under Handle -> Yellow Synthetic CV you should see it. I have two and they are great knives.

You can PM me if you need the name.

I think you'd like the  icon.
Any Case stockman with CV and yella scales should come in under your price limit, as should the brown synthetic with stainless line and the American Workman line (if they even have a stockman in the AW, never seen one)

They do make an American Workman Stockman. It has blue scales instead of the brown that I've generally seen on the AW series.

The American Workman line has blue scales, I haven't seen a brown one. You may be thinking of the brown synthetic line, or I may have just not seen them.

classic case amber bone CV stockman. This think holds up for a long freaking time. This one is from '82 and i am the second owner. One of my favorite knives. definitely my favorite case.

Can't argue against the 301, also check out the "auction" site as I scored a late 70's 301 recently for under $14.00. It saw only lite use and with a little cleaning up and a sharpening I couldn't go wrong. Good luck.

Welcome aboard; I found at least one dealer that sales this enough under 50 that it want break the price with shipping I gave 49.99 for mine before taxes at the big store with a bass in the name....

I just misread your original post and blended that sentence together. Mind wasn't working as the coffee wasn't made yet. :) (as should the brown synthetic with stainless line and the American Workman line)

Also at least one online dealer has a page listing "Case Work Knives" and it lists the the brown and the blue scaled knives together. And that's one of the places I've bought both types from.

Peter Parker, just been carrying that same CASE today. Amber Bone has really mellowed with use , useful carry at all times.

Regards, Will

Wow, those cases sure look nice. I think I'm going with one of those or a Schrade old timer.... My experience with Case is good, mainly through my stepdad's collection. He only has a Pike electric special edition copperlock, and a Sodbuster jr. in yellow, but they are both amazing. Looks like I'm getting a Case stockman in either CV or SS.

LOL! this is exactly what SAK owner-friends tell me. well, i was ignoring them coz i thought SAKs were a different sort altogether. thanks.

Under $50?

A Queen #9 4" stockman in Amber Bone and D2
For $56

Great quality
It feels so much more substantial in my hand than other stockmans

Sweat to get the D2 sharp then just strop it for the rest of its life
The steel holds an edge so much better than anything else in a $50 range
