Hello all,

I have been asked by a friend to find a gift for someone. They are looking for a good hunting knife in the $100-$200 price range. I collect mostly custom folders, so im looking for any ideas people might have. Thanks for the help.

Look at the comprehensive range offered by Bark River. there are sizes, steels and handles to suit most tastes and needs, excellent quality too.

Bark River has lots of knives in that price range. Great designs, classic materials, and excellent craftsmanship. I've given them several times as gifts, always with positive reviews.

Also, keep an eye on the For Sale by Maker forum section. There are usually knives available there that would make great gifts and hunting knives.

Keep an eye out on the "Customs by Maker" forum here- there are some great buys.

There is no such thing as a "BEST" sub $200.00 hunting knife. That is purely a matter of personal opinion, and preference.

I have been told that the "BEST" hunting knife is one of these suckers:

Inexpesive, no sharpening, purpose built.

That said, something like this would probably be very much appreciated:

You really don't want to try and get the "best", it is an impossible task...what you want, your friend wants, and the recipient wants, is "good/great enough".

Anything Dozier. Can usually be had for under $200.00 on the sale forum. However, I also have a lot of respect for BRK&T. Their knives also cut great.

I agree with others.... the "best" hunting knife would be ANY quality fixed blade that you buy. A knife is a chunk of ground steel with some G-10, wood, Micarta, or other scales on one end. (((:D))) Leaving some room of course for accurate primary grinds, properly treated steel, fit and finish (attention to detail), and design to fit the particular anticipated use.

Generally speaking, you buy it....you'll like it.....

That said, I'll add another kudo for Bark River knives.

Keep an eye out for a Gerber 400, presentation grade.
They run between $100 and $135, but are hard to find these days.

Best knife I have ever owned. Period

I think there is a Dozier Buffalo River Hunter for sale in the custom knives forum in that price range. It's my favorite hunter!

Bark River or Bob Dozier. IMHO, the very best knives youan find in the $100-$300 price range.
