Hey i was just curious what you guys thought was the best survival knife out there. I know thats very much up to interpretation but I just like to get new ideas on these things. I've been hearing a lot about the bk2 which i'm getting in the mail soon. I have no reason to doubt it will be an excellent knife since I have the bk7 and am impressed with that knife very much. Just would like to hear your thoughts.

I guess for bushcrafting. Living in the elements that sort of thing. I'm not looking for a specific answer more just getting peoples thoughts on what knife or knives they feel would be best in those situations

I'm rather partial to this one, at least right now...

No such thing. One knife is not the best at everything.

Do some research and find a knife that can perform the best at the tasks you expect it to do .Hold it in hand before buying if possible. There are as many knives out there to chose from as there are opinions as to what's best.

Mine?
BK-7
Esee 4
Esee 6
Fallkniven F1/S1/A1
Spyderco Bushcraft
Koster EDC

These are my top survival/bushcraft/hiking knives.

+1 Great answer.

The one you have on you.

I think too many people say this as an automated response.

Is the Classic SAK the best survival knife? No...no matter how you look at it. Even if you were in the middle of the woods with no shelther, water, or food, it's still not the best survival knife.

dsol: It depends what you intend it for but generally, a fixed blade in the 4''-10'' range (give or take) can handle most of your "survival" needs.

If you're in a jungle and need to hack paths and clear vines etc. you will want something more machete like...so it depends on where you are as well as what you want to be able to do with it.

I don't care what anyone says... "The one you have on you" is it, and i'll add, that having a good head on your shoulders about how to use it, what to and what not to use it for, and when to use something else at hand all go with the question. Unless your That idiot with the TV show selling his own stuff... Then it's obviously his knife. :)

If price is no object, a big Busse knife. It's the one that won't break on you, is relatively easy to sharpen, and has a decent enough level of corrosion resistance.

Wait...."survival" or "living in the elements"? Those are two entirely different things.

Interesting point.

For me though, in a "survival" situation, where I needed to get back to civilization as quickly as I possible before I stopped surviving...corrosion resistance wouldn't seem to have time to come into play. Though a knife light and small enough to allow me the greatest possible mobility would.
