I can afford one folder to start my collection... I have been looking at knives by EDI, Emerson, Microtech, CR, etc. Which knife is the best for my money, for general carry? I can afford no more than about $350. Also are there other brands I should look at?

Also take a look at Benchmade and Spyderco. You really need to narrow down your price range for anyone to help you. Otherwise it would just be another sebenza thread.

Ayryq,

For the price you mentioned you could afford just about any production folder out there, including the Sebenza. You could also afford to buy several from different companies for comparison purposes. Knowing your needs and potential carry situations would be a great benefit.

If I wanted to start a collection to compare different blade styles, sizes, steel types and company qualities, I would consider the following;

Benchmade 720, clip point with ATS-34 steel, aluminum handle and the Axis Lock.

Kershaw Random Task, a modified Warncliffe with CPM440V steel, Micarta scales and the Speed Safe opening mechanism.

Spyderco Wegner JR., the soon to be gone sub 3” drop point blade of ATS-34 steel, with G-10 scales and a solid liner lock.

sorry... I'll be more specific. Right now the only knife I carry regularly is a Beretta Airlite. That's sad. I've been doing a job and will be getting a $250 check soon. I can blow as much of it as I want but I can only justify buying one knife.

I'd like a linerlock (I have plenty of lockbacks), for regular carry but probably infrequent use (I'm a college student-something to have at night would be nice in my city). I'd like something high quality and possibly good looking. I think I'd like to get a tanto point, maybe. If I could get Damascus steel, that'd be cool, but it tends to be expensive and I don't know anything about it's strengh, sharpness. I think I'd like a pocket clip.
On another note, does anyone know anything about Kain custom linerlocks?

You can't go wrong with any of the companies you've been looking at, but for everyday carry and all around great looking knives I would add William Henry's to your list.

ayryq,

I've been a folder fanatic for 10 years. Save yourself the hassle and money and buy a plain large or small Sebenza. In my opinion, and that of MANY others, you won't find a consistently better knife for the money. And I'm not just saying that because I recently traded $450 worth of folders for a large plain! Its a viscious circle, so save yourself the agony and cut to the chase. End of story.

INCOMING!!!

Later,
Chris

You might also consider a Spyderco Military in CPM440V. It is flat ground and a workhorse of a knife. I carry mine daily and have enjoyed it immensely. It's probably a good choice if you have large hands, like me. You can probably find one for a c-note or so on the net, and save the rest of your cash for other cool things, like the little woman. That's what I did.

That said, I can't disagree with CPR about the Sebenza. I don't own one, but I have a friend who has two, and they are very nice indeed. If I was in your situation and could justify spending that much, I'd certainly be tempted to go the Sebenza route.

Illinois law:

720 ILCS 5/33A-1... A person is considered armed with a dangerous weapon... when he carries on or about his person or is otherwise armed with a category I or category II weapon. (b) A category I weapon is a [firearm or] a knife with a blade at least 3 inches in length...

Is this a problem?

I'd give the new Benchmade 730 Axis Lock ("Ares") a serious look.

Stop when you get to bone.

I don't know... I think I like the blade style on the 720 better than the 730... Also not sure I can handle the funky multi-colored handle.

Re: Your question about the Il. law. I think it depends on what part of Il. you live and your intended purpose for carrying the knife. If you were ever caught with a knife and asked its intended purpose it is always a tool and never for defense purposes. Best yet if you can justify the knife is needed for some part of your job or activities required by your job. Since you mention you are a student you may want to tread lightly if you choose something with a blade length over 3". Of course this law leaves a lot of interpretation to the police officers who are questioning you about it.

Since you'd like a linerlock, I'd recommend a Benchmade AFCK... It's my favorite in that configuration.

Before deciding on a linerlock, look at some of the old threads concerning linerlock failures. IMO linerlocks, particularly in production knives, should be avoided. I've been recomending to those who've asked me to either get a REKAT with a rolling lock like the Pioneer or the Carnivor (I'll also whisper Sifu

) or a Benchmade Axis lock. Also Spyderco has a new lock coming out that sounds very promising as well as SOG. That being said, with your budget, if I were you I'd get a Sabenza. Most people I know don't have $350 to spend on a knife.

Ayrq,
Depending on whether you want to go large or small, you might consider the Spyderco Starmate (large) or new 440V Native (small) eventhough it is a lockback.
