Best tasting food to fit in a survival kit

-canned smoked almonds
-the various brands of "powerbars"
-jerkey
-brew kit (as in "tea," you beer drinkers :)
-MRE peanutbutters
-M&M's
-GORP
-homemade hardtack
 
I'm not into power bars or snickers etc. If I want something sweet, I eat honey. I keep several varieties of the exceptional food in our pantry. I usually carry honey from the local Sage in our area. It offers sustainable energy and it burns efficiently without harming the body, plus it's an excellent topical for burns, etc., as bacteria can't live in it. Be aware that honey will attract unwanted visitors. :eek: It also carries the properties and benefits of the plant that it comes from. Which is a good thing. ;)

I also carry parched corn that is ground into a coarse flour. It alone will sustain the body for long periods of time without any harm to the body. That is, unless you eat too much of it and then drink a lot of water. A small amount eaten and then water drank will swell in the stomach, relieving the hunger pangs. But too much of it can cause some real discomfort.

Protein comes from Jerky and I will sometimes grind up buffalo jerky and add it to the parched corn. Something to consider about eating meat as an emergency source of nutrition is that it will require you to drink more water in order to digest it and still remain hydrated. If heading into an area where water isn't readily available, it's best to leave the protein home.

For my BOB, hunting pack and emergency pack in the pickup, I carry a couple of MRE entrees along with what I've already mentioned. I also carry oatmeal, coffee, tea, a few spices and condiments, as well as Emergen 'C', which is a rehydration drink powder (water alone won't rehydrate you). It works great.
 
Unlike longbow i am a chocolate bar fan (like SNickers or Mars bars) - they are small, huge on calories (= energy). Like all sweets they have high glycemic index though so unless you can control yourself you're going to get hungry very soon again - hungry, but not really lacking (or needing) more food that is. This means you'd get really fat if you ate everything when your stomach thinks so :D
 
Corn nuts.

Lasts along time and lots of callories. Are a bit salty though. I don't as a rule pack any food in my PSK though, aside from some tea bags and sugar.

In some survival situations, salt is a critical reqirement. Score one for corn nuts.


Honey does not have a listed "shelf life." Theoretically ever-lasting.

Fats are the most concentrated form of calories. How about those fast-food packets of "spread"?

I like tropical chocolate bars. :)
 
Roasted nuts (peanuts, cashew nuts, pistachios, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc.) with salt is what i forgot to add to my ost, my #2 choice, provided that i have the room for both (if not it's just the candy, otherwise it's an extra bag of nuts). Of those i porefer cashew (less salt than peanuts) or sunflower seeds roasted with some soy sauce. That, and a miniature pack of glucose & vitamins & minerals tablets (but yo usaid "tasty" :D ).

I find plain water to be quite drinkable so tea bags seem like a waste of space to me but YMMV.
 
k-rations! people say they taste bad, but i like them! big huge 9" by 9" crackers and PB, bags of dehydrated fruit, or meat. there good, long lasting, and there full of carbs, vitamins, and minerals.
 
I carry the folowing in the ol' BOB, Mmmmm....food;
Jerky (a couple of flavors), powerbars (they all taste like peanut butter to me), Gorp (a mixture of; nuts, seeds, chocolate chips, maybe some chexmix, sometimes some of the peanutsized jellybeans), some of the cheaper granola bars (nut&fruit), jollyrancher hard candies, Parched (coarse) cornmeal, some gatorade mix(sometimes with koolade mixed in). I find that the powerbars (and cornmeal) are not all that good so they tend to last longer that some of the otherstuff.

I don't carry food in my PSK, but it does contain a small quantity of salt.
My BOB has two MRE packages in it
My Day bag has some Mainstay rations in it
I usually carry some trail mix, with a mix of nuts, M&Ms, and fruit as well. That goes in my BDU / jacket / some other pocket.
 
Don't forget that it takes water to process protein, especially jerky. Long term you need a balanced diet with protein, but short term, you don't need food at all. Powerbars, Balance, et al are nice to have, not necessary. That said, my fav these days is called "Organic Food Bar" with Omega-3 Flax which can be found at Trader Joes.
 
has anyone seen a sea survival calorie bar. three bars is enough for like 3 days incredible. too bad lembas bread wasnt real, that would be the ultimate survival ration.
 
My personal choice are these (read bottom) , mind you this is for my BOB. They are cheap and have a long shelf life.These and a few tea bags for comfort and caffeine.
I have read more negatives than positives about the use of salt in kits. Candy etc , is useless if your 'bugout' is in summer months (imagine that melted snickers all over your goodies in your bag). Jekry and the corn meal and honey , those are good ideas but you would have to replace the first two often and I cant see carrying enough honey to last a few days (bulky) , not to mention what it would do to your teeth :eek:

In my BOB: Clif bars, kipper snacks, tea bags, sugar & creamer packets. I carry a Tommy Cooker & fuel tabs in an MSR Stowaway Pot so I will sometimes carry a package or two of ramen if I plan on living out of my BOB for a few days.

In "general" Simcax is sorta right.
In a PSK food isnt realy the issue. The ability to gather food is the issue.
My opinion of a PSK or in my own words a Posabls Kit is a item carriing the esential of survival, in the space of a cigarette package.
Thus any item outside of 2 bullion cubes, and maybe a pack or two of tea bags is out of the question. I also dont carry those items in my PSK.
I take a small amount of corella!

If we are talking about a PS Pack..K (72hr pack)
Cliff bars are almost as good as power bars, and require less water intake. Big bonus. Also tast a heak of a lot better! And give non abrasove stools.

Thomos Linton said salt is good. And he is right to a digree.
I take electrolite packages, with cranbery. Yes cranbery is a dieretic, but its a toxin purifyer. Handy for my area of country were water is plentifule.

LongBow50 is right that corn/beans is a perfect food. Light easy to carry. Unfortunatly unless mixed with some wheat flower the carbs arent there. And unless your body is used to the corn (corn is easier and beter to digest, beans are more harsh but better for you) and flower mixture, um...gas and the pains that go with it.

Chocholate is very very great. But not in a psk. I tryed that once in a hot temp enviro. It made my psk pretty much usless. The chocolate melted. In a 72hr pack. Chockolate and penutbutter are my personal gods.

Personaly I think caring food stuffs in you psk is not what a psk is all about.

Unless personal survival kit has changed in the last few years, it about personal survival. What you will bet guarunted to be carring with you for youre survival.

Food gathering.
MINOR medical emergancies.
Period.
Knowledge will take care of the rest
 
I have looked at MRE's, powerbars, Gatorade powder pouches, but I think that you should be looking foremost at what type of mental frame of mind you will be in any survival situation. Do you think you'll wig out? If you think there is a chance of you having a breakdown, you need to work on more than your food stores, if you go nuts, it won't matter how much food you have.
 
I guess it all boils down to how one defines a PSK or even a BOB/72 hour kit.
Realistically speaking , I live in a mid sized city (Fresno) my chances of procuring any wild food were something cataclysmic to take place are nil , there are some 700,000 people in my area , not counting nearby mountain communities and smaller cities , that mass of people will be going apesh*t when the feces hits the fan and regular food runs out , anything on 4 legs or with fins will become breakfast lunch and dinner.
My PSK doesnt contain anything for food , in my case if it came down to it my PSK will hopefully help me get home to where my supplies and goodies are (my PSK = very basic 1st aid , light source and SAK) My BOB is more comprehensive but not unlike the PSK , the whole purpose of having dense calorie bars is a compact , easy to consume source of food. No heating or preparation required and little water needed to digest (of course you have to have water but the less you need for digestion purposes the more you can use for basic hydration). Of course the final choice is up to the individual and what meet/suit his or her needs.
IMHO one is far better off procuring book and knowledge on edbile plants in his/her area than to worry about fishing or hunting , that is living in a urban scene. There are dozens of "weeds" in all urban areas that one can eat and are quite nutritous , those will all be overlooked by the vast majority of people , of course if your situation is rural , the choice of edbile plant life expands dramatically , you could quite easily 'live off the land' if you know what to look for , all without time consuming fishing and hunting. Unless of course , all you have is time :)

Yea Silenthunter , point well taken. It is not me that I worry about , it is the masses of totally unprepared people that will go nuts , That you can count on.
 
I think I would bug out for a couple days, then I would come to my senses, I really rely on running water and electricity too much :D.
