Best tasting food to fit in a survival kit

One thing that I have noticed and started to stock up on is Tuna in the foil packs. It is some thing that we eat anyway, (sorry Flipper) a lot lighter than the canned stuff, pretty cheap at Wal-mart, and lasts for 2+ years. My I don't keep any in my kit in the car, I am concened about what excessive heat might do to it. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Tuna is an excellent food, but like other protein rich foods, it will take more water to digest, so in any kind of survival situation where water is at a premium, you may want to pass on it.

I do carry food in my kits. The comfort/morale factor that something to eat provides is very important. My regular EDC stuff is enough of a survival kit to handle most 72 hour scenarios, so if I carry anything else, it'll be enhanced shelter options, extra water if necessary, and food. I also have a 4 year old son, who'd be with me in any emergency, and something to eat would be vital to maintaining his spirits...

For just pure survival, food isn't strictly necessary for a 72 hour kit, but it's the psychological benefits that are worth the effort IMO....

While bicycle riding through the woods of michigan I carry the following tasty rations: 200 ounces of water, Gatorade Powder, 6 peanut butter Clif bars, and 2 cans of Spam. Lots of people seem to hate spam, but I love it and its high in sodium which you need when constantly sweating.

I've heard that all those nasty Chee-zits crap type crackers are good for that reason. I hate having to dig the orange goop off my gums with a finger afterwards and again, more water... :barf:

Spam is great. Besides being very versitile, it stores well. By the way, I read someplace the most popular state for spam is Hawaii. Don't ask me why.

Spam and crackers, backed spam, fried spam and eggs, sweet and sour spam...

I was 18 years old before I ever tasted Spam. My dad wouldn't allow it in the house. When he was in the Navy in WWII during the kamikazi attacks off Okinawa he was at GQ from pretty much dawn to dusk on a 20 mount. The cooks would bring Spam sandwiches (just Spam & bread) around to the gun crews between air attacks. Dad said if he never saw another piece of Spam the rest of his life he would be happy.
Gene :D

I cant tell you how many times Velveta shells and cheese has put a smile on my face, if its you and another partner, 2 canteen cups, and one box will fill the belly and give you some energy when you need it.....I cannot live without my Velveta shells and cheese...

But you need a stream of water to wash those cups :)

See. it's all a matter of perspective. I knew and old boy whi was stuck on the Canal when the Navy had to leave. As he told it, they were down to Japanese rations - canned fish and rice -- and not much of that. Some of the first "real" food to show up included canned meat that he said was "like" SPAM. As a result, he like SPAM just fine, thanks. He liked it especially pan fried on toast.

Food has an important effect on morale. Last year I stuck my snowmobile on a remote river in over-flow. My three your old daughter was very upset and kept repeating.."Oh No..What are we going to do?" She was and is the very definition of dramatic.

Before getting to work on getting un-stuck I set her up with a space blanket and some mini-eatmore bars. This distracted her and calmed her down. I cut down a spruce tree and levered myself out then used the spruce as a railway track to get out of the slush.

Ever-since I have carrioed a bit of food with me. I find power bars are better than regular candy bars because they have a hint of mediciney taste that keeps them safe from me late at night.

Caribou Jerky, Logan Bread and pilot biscuits come along when I am on a serious trip. Bullion cubes helps extend and flavour any game caught. Spam or Klik is good but the weight of the can is a pain..however fried on a pilot biscuit at -40 is a very good treat.

In BOB, not in PSK:

Gel-packs from runner's stores -- pure electrlytes & the right kind of quick energy used by marathon runners.

Seasonings: red pepper, black pepper, garlic powder, soy sauce in plastic take-out tubes, tabasco, seasoned salot -- anything to make whatever you scroung taste good.

Peanut butter in tubes; locally produced honey put up in tubes you get from the container store.

Good quality loose tea -- compresses to nothing, and is good for what ails you. Everything looks better after you build a little fire, make a cup, and think about what you're gonna do next.

Pack food in liter size nalgene bottles. Keeps food in, everything else out, and you can never have too many good water containers. If you are really OC, you can pack loose rice around everything else -- it won't shift around that way.

You know, I think "Skippy" is the company selling tubes of heavily homogenized peanut butter. The civilian, rough-equivalent to MRE Peanutbutters pouches.

Peanutbutter is handy, cause all kinds of tastey animals will show up to eat it. :D
