I just bought a BK-9 and I live in a high humidity area, My KA-Bar USMC mini was stored in its sheath in a drawer in spotless condition but 4 months later it was covered in rust specks anyway. I do not want it to get worse nor my new Becker to rust any so whats the best way to prevent rust? Preferably something affordable.

a nice coating of Hoppe's No.9 solvent after use. Works for me. used for gun cleaning and rust prevention. :)

I believe I already have a few bottles of that, I was worried it would remove the coating due to it being a solvent. or else dull the blade some how.

I like Tuf Cloth / Tuf Glide.

It won't harm the finish and it's very effective against rust.

However, I've seen this type of question generally draw many different responses -
there are many good rust preventatives on the market and folks have their favorites.

You can also try Ballistol. It's non-toxic(mineral oil based), and cleans/lubes/prevents rust. I use it on all of my high carbon steels!! I also don't store my blades in their sheaths...

leather absorbs moisture in the air + carbon steel knives stored in them for 4 months + humid environement = rust.

wash after use, sharpen (optional), light coat of oil. store outside of sheath. use silica dissectant (optional). store in air tight device with rechargable silica dissectant (best option if long term).

ps- if in the field, maintenance after use is best. at home, mainenance should be easier.

The coating is pretty tough stuff. I wouldn't worry about it coming off. Any oil will do. Use mineral oil it you plain to use the knife for food prep.

Is the BK-9 sheath any better then a leather sheath?

if you just regularly maintain your knives you should be good to go!

ps-never neglect gear.

pss-using your knife helps keep rust off too.

Use is the best thing to prevent rust IMO...carving battoning chopping.. usually abbrades most away.. than spit on her wipe her down and sheath her.. just my 2 cents fwiw

VPI [vapor phase inhibiter ] paper wrapped around knife [ no sheath] and put in a zip=loc bag . Best first to clean dry and coat with RIG preservative grease .

BTW RIG products are back on the market , handled now by Birchwoo Casey .

RIG.
But there was a study done on corrosion protection of various oils and the like. I'll see if I can find it.

Im sure alot of you ocasionally use one of your "unconventional" knives for some sort of food prep. I while back I realized that I was poisoning myself with REM-oil. Now I rubb my knives down with what I cook with....OLIVE oil!! Doesnt evaporate, its good for you and good for 1095.

Olive oil is OK for the short term; for a "using" knife.
Longer term, it goes rancid and loses its protective properties.

I've found that a better choice for food prep knives is food grade mineral oil,
mentioned above by frontline29.

a bottle of mineral oil is cheap, odorless, coloreless, and goes a long way.

heck, i got a quart of it at a dollar store ;) bought two. never know ;>

Spray on RemOil and mineral Oil seem to both be effective and I own both. Can I wipe the white coating off my knife after I spray the RemOil on?
