Yup, the topic is which knife has the best thumbstud. For all you hair-splitting types, you can define "best" any way you want (e.g., most functional, best looking, best for cleaning out your ears). And yes, I also know that when it comes to functionality, aesthetics, etc., the thumbstud is just one part of the complete package.

There, now that we've gotten that out of the way :p :), my vote goes to the William Henry Evolution series thumbstuds. I give them my vote, because their thumbstuds are very grippy, don't chew up your thumb or cause pain, don't hook on clothing, and match the nice uncluttered designs of the knives.

So which thumbstud gets your vote?

I guess, technically, it ain't a "stud", but my vote goes for the Spyderco Hole!!!

I like the very pretty and grippy thumbstud on the Chris Reeve Knives Sebenza Integral Lock Folding Knife. It works well with gloves or without and is placed for a smooth opening arc.

Am I allowed to vote for the disc on my mini commander ? That knife opens like a dream (and with a nice muted 'click').

There have abeen a lot of complaints about them in the past but I really like the ones on my SERE and Shrike - they work well.

Would also say the LCC's are very good.

I like Larry Davidsons slanted style thumb stud. The slant makes the thumb very unlikely to slip off and he seems to put the stud in the right place so you do'nt have to move your thumb all the way back or foward.Next I like Chew's little rubber capped thumb stud.Probably the most comfortable out all that I've tried.Of course with Chews Voo Doo pivot all you need is a little push and the bearing takes over to open the blade.

I would also say the Microtech Dual "Hump", its not really as much of a stud as it is a "Hump" They work well on all of the Microtech Models :)

I'm sorta partial to the thumb disc that J.W. Smith uses on his folders. Don't get me wrong as I'm not saying this is the best system nor am I saying that J.W. makes the absolute best thumbdisc. All I'm saying is that I like the way he does the thumbdisc, nothing more, nothing less!

It's only featured on one knife, but my vote goes to the CRKT BladeLOCK Thumbstud: It isn't just a thumbstud. It locks the knife and unlocks it, from both the open and closed possitions.

Check it out.

Am I allowed to vote for the disc on my mini commander

Of all the folders I own, the EKI and BM discs give the best leverage, followed closely by the Spydie hole. My EKI Commander and Spyderco Military are close to effortless.

My LCC and BM710 studs are good, but not AS good, as the disc or hole.

...i'm a SpydieHole fan, but...

the stud on my Microtech Socom is just about the easiest / best placed i've ever used.

Metis

I'm kinda fond of the style of thumbstud Allen Elishewitz uses for his knives.

Well, I'm going to be the first to come forward and say I think the Sebenza stud is definitely the best for cleaning out your ears.

(Mark, you DID offer this as a criteria... :) )

I like the Spydie-hole with the "cobra hood" (after the edges of the 'hood are smoothed-out with a file & sandpaper).

Here's another vote for the Spydie hole. It provides the greatest surety of purchase when opening a knife. Once your thumb is in the hole it's hard to accidentally lose control or interrupt the motion .

Tom Mayo's TNT round-ended slot hole gets my vote, bar none.

This knife opens quickly, reliably and safely - in both thumb and ring-finger openings, both righty and lefty. I have never experienced such a great opening knife.

What more can one ask for?

:)

Actually, I have to disagree with you on this one. It's way too pointy and hurts your ear, to say nothing of what the blade does to the side of your head
