Some say the Ray Mears parang is tops.

Others like a Golok or some other short bladed machete

This one is old, but I like it and the variation

...and others prefer a knife

What do you like and why?

Those all look really good.
I prefer the Parang or Golok pattern, the billhooks are cool, but I find myself using a bit more energy with them..
I also like a good Axe and knife combo!
The fun is having them all to use and see what works for you.

For a compact chopper I find a well-made billhook to be hard to beat. Traditional billhooks (and some other inspirations) influenced my Baryonyx machete, which is my personal go-to woods blade. However, I don't really think there's such thing as an "ultimate" wilderness tool. There are tons of tool types and designs that will excel at a wide range of wilderness/camping/survival tasks.

Depends if the bush is sage, scrub oak, mesquite, pine, etc etc etc. A good Scandinavian Forest Axe, Hudson Bay or Cruiser would be hard to beat, as well as a traditional latin machete.

Not a bad policy. Thinly veiled selling attempts still count and will be counted against you by the community. A year membership as a knife maker/craftsman or dealer will pay for itself in no time, so there's not much good reason not to make the investment.

nipsip ......... when you start paying to sell on the forums I'll give you my opinion.

thank god I wasn't the only one noticing. I mean every thread the other day had that same picture. It's a decent looking golok but seriously every thread doesn't need a picture of it w/ the description. if he would have stayed low key maybe but he went full out with it and it's not fair to the makers who do pay for their memberships

I guess it really isn't any of my business. He has been told about it on another forum also and keeps posting. Here's a subtle "hint" before heads roll.

I've always thought that those were interesting, but a little too bent for my tastes.

"Best Tool For The Bush"

Gillete 3-blade and some Barbasol.

Knock off the back alley deals and pay for the right to sell in the forums.

Not a big fan of the Woodman's Pal myself. Too short, too closed of a hook, and that hook is made difficult to use if you purchase the version with the knuckle guard. Also, no usable point on it anywhere. I appreciate its history, and the idea of the thing is sound, but the design itself is deficient in many areas that it need not be. I can't think of much it can do that my Baryonyx can't do better--and I don't say that to brag or promote my design. I genuinely believe it. That being said, the Woodman's Pal IS much more available than the Baryonyx is right now, and is a well-built tool made right here in the USA. It just wouldn't be my personal choice.

Yeah I really like the look of those. Haven't gotten the chance to play with one, but Mistwalker rates it pretty highly and I trust his assessment completely. Nothing in the lines of it make me think it would do anything short of a stellar job.

I agree - it all depends on the area. In Texas I carry a Golok - if I was in south texas - it would be a Machette. If I back home in Michigan it would be my GB Scandinavian Forrest Axe.

I'd have to choose a Parang like knife with a thicker blade around .28 - .3. Or just a standard large fixed blade, like the Junglas, Power Eagle 12, NMFBM, etc.
