Guys,

What software do you recommend for printing detailed (24K) topo maps?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

 +1 on Terrain Navigator.

Once you get it, you'll forget how much you paid for it because you'll be using it constantly.

I have a lot of fun downloading routes and waypoints from my GPS after a hike or exploration and seeing it on a map in T.N.

You can also do that in reverse... you can pull up a map in T.N., find a spot you want to hike to, then download it into your GPS for use in the field.

And you can customize the maps you print. It's a great product.

Do you guys think it necessary to get the Pro version? I've never really used aerials.

Been using National Geographic Topo and love it. Us it for Geocaching and backpacking. Cant compare it to the Terrain navigator. But it works for me and i also got for it the streets as well..

Download the free version of Global Mapper.
Find your state's free GIS database, try searching for "(State Name) Geospatial Data".
Download all the free USGS quads in drg or tiff format (& tons of other stuff like color aerial photos) you can handle. Customize, Print, etc. etc. All you pay for is the paper.

I think the "Pro" version is aimed at people who need the advanced features -- surveyors, etc.

You can find free aerial photos on the 'net, if you do need to see some.
