You have a choice of 2 knives to take on vacation, with the only sharpener around, being a cheap accusharperner. What 2 Knives do you take?

I'd take my Spyderco Endura and my CRKT ABC Hammond (mainly because they are new)

Depends on where I go on vacation. If theres a chance I might have to turn it over when entering places like museums, airports, amusement parks, etc. I carry my Gerber LST Jr. Easily replaced for about $14 and a very functional little knife for such a price.

Otherwise its a MB Mini Grip 556 or a Case Medium Stockman CV.

It depends on where you go for vacation. I wouldn't take a bowie knife to Europe and expect to be allowed to keep it.

I would chose plain edge Pacific Salt and a plain edge Caly Jr. Frn only and coloured handles if possible.

My coming vacation is for two weeks and I am bringing a Leatherman Charge multitool. I will put it in checked baggage for the flights to and from New York to California and keep it in my carry bag during the tour until I can gauge how others might react.

Since this will not be a wilderness vacation, pliers and the various multifunctions should come in handy. I will sharpen both the PE and SE blades before leaving. If, in the unlikely cirumstance, the plain edge blade (154CM) becomes dull, chances are the serrated blade will keep cutting till vacation's end.

For some reason, I feel a multitool or SAK is less likely to be confiscated than a locking, single blade folder. Might others have had a different experience?

presume ur going on vacation to az, where every knife is legal.

then what would you take to ca, where very little is legal?

Ka Bar Dozier as I related in another post, one of the best $20 knives around so not too painful if it's confiscated

just be sure to pack it in checked luggage, NOT in the carry-on

A Leatherman often comes in handy when you are on the road

Agree. I also keep a fixed blade in the car along with pepper stray, and a 3" folder to carry that I know is legal just about everywhere I might go. If you are going to a particular state, check the state law. You might even be able to take one of your autos (if you have any).

Main point, keep it legal and if in doubt, check the laws before you leave.

Regards

Spyderco Native and Busse assault shaker. Then again it depends on where you're vacationing. If I'm going on a hunt I'll pack something larger and lock it with the gun case. There's no safer way to take knives flying.

Schrade 1520T Sharpfinger. Love this sharp, sharpenable, ergonomic, tough, low-cost, low-profile little knife.

For a folder-- I like all my name-brand folders (even my Gerbers) too much to risk them, so I guess I'd take one of my better Frost or Maxam cheapies. I have a drawer full of them. "Better" here must be understood in the context of "dirt cheap and wouldn't mind losing."

PS: I assumed we meant traveling by plane, luggage at the tender mercies of airline and security personnel. Otherwise, I'd take the Kershaw Blur.

Where are you getting your information from? You'd be surprised what CA law allows. In CA you can carry any sized folder concealed, even a CUDA Maxx. You can also legally carry any sized fixed blade, as long as it's done openly. There are differences between the various municipalities of course, but on the whole I think CA is pretty knife tolerant.

I'm out in Breckenridge CO on vacation and doing lots of hiking.. couldn't bring my SERE b/c we flew out, so picked up a knife here. I looked over lots of knives at Sportsmans Guide in Denver and decided on the Kershaw BLUR. Truely a nice knife for $60. Assisted opening, sharp as can be, black and thin so does not stick out or take up much room. I'll just fedex it back to my home before we leave. Check one out.

Pacific Salt, Leatherman Charge, Salt 1....Already packed for camping on Northern California coast.

I don't know what you've been told but California has very good knife carry laws. Not the best, but better than most.

Opinel no7/8 of normal SAK in your pocket and LM Wave in in checked baggage (and even put a small cheap fixed in like a Mora)

..if you travel around in 'urban' Europa

How about a Leatherman such as the Charge or Wave and a SAK with Alox scales such as the STD issue or Soldier............both are indispensible IMHO
