Best value between $300-400

Out of the 5 I’ve handled and had 1 had an outstanding action so smooth and snappy even better than ZT bearings can’t describe it. 2 had good flipping and drop free nearly close actions. 1 had an ok action in both regards. 1 is almost without a decent at all. And two of them won’t center at all while maintaining a good flipping/closing action.

Agreed inconsistent if flipping is your most important thing get something else. Unless it’s one of the new models.

Same with my Eklipse, no friggin detent. They’re good knives but obviously their repeatability in manufacturing leaves something to be desired.

The Eklipse line is newer and so the generations don’t line up with the XMs. I believe the gen 2 Eklipse is the newest version and only came out fairly recently. Also, what’s with the friggin’ teflon washers. (To help hide poor tolerances almost certainly)

That’s not to denegrate the Hinderer knives. They are excellent knives. Different manufacturers excel at different things and it just happens that a very consistent flipping action isn’t one of Hinderer’s fortés.

Actually for whatever reason it seems like when it comes to very consistently great actions the place where they are becoming very common is the Chinese folders. I don’t know what they are doing that so many American companies seem to be unable to.

Alot of Hinderers don’t have great flipping action though. For example I got a 2nd Gen eklipse with a positively mushy flipping action.

True. Just need to look at newer gens. I have 2 gen 4 and both flip great. I assume gen 5 and 6 are even better.

The Gen 2 is the newest generation of the Eklipse. I believe it came around the same time as the Gen 5 XM-18s.

I guess if I want to flip an Eklipse I can just use my ZT0392.

Not heavy use, but i would certainly like to carry and use it. Best steel i can get for the price point, I know theres some M390 out there.

Since it seems like a fairly major purchase for you that is intended to be a special knife you carry for a long time maybe the best idea is to slow down and watch some youtube videos of different knives. Find some reviewers you like and watch their videos. Eventually you will come across some knives that you feel like you really would like to try.

Then you can post a new thread with a list of your potential choices and people can comment on any pros or cons of these models.

Again I wanted to ask, are you looking to get an excellent knife for around 200$? As in would you be happy with a knife that fulfilled your requirements for as close to the lower end of your budget?

Or are you looking for something more special and exclusive that would be closer to the 400$ budget?

A curveball option would be to put $200 into a knife like a Real Steel Megalodon (M390, ti framelock flipper on roller bearings), then put the remaining budget into things like anodization and such.

Something a little more special than my 0450 and pm2. I thought putting some feelers out here would point me in the right direction for deeper research via YouTube and reviews. I dont want to go custom but low midtech and high end production is the sweet spot for me at this time.

Check out Reate knives, WE knives, Olamic 24/7 Wayfarer, Zeiba makes some good stuff I have seen come up for used here. You can find some excellent condition knives barely used on the for sale section of this forum that will give you access to some really special knives for $400.

I am all in favor of the Spyderco Slysz Bowie. I carry mine every day, and I've had a bunch of others to pick from over the yrs. You will have to buy a "used" one on the Exchange (~$275), but that's where I buy all of my knives anyway. I have owned four or five of this model, and a used one is generally perfectly fine. Good blade-steel (CTS-XHP) and good action; will last forever.

This is an excellent response. I own Reates, they're awesome, no doubt. Olamic is a name I've heard again and again. I'd love to own one and am excited for my first, whenever that happens. I've also heard good things about WE. As for Zeiba, his knives are custom and on that note, priced amazingly. I have lusted over a number of his models and hope to handle/own a few one day.

For example there is a custom Charl Pienaar front flipper in outstanding condition on the used section for only 300$. I know what I would be buying if I was the OP and had 300$ laying around.

Personally, I'd choose the RJ Martin Machine midtech. It's one of the best production flippers I've found and they retail around $350. USA made too. Don't have a photo of mine handy but looks just like this:
