If you were able to go to $120, I'd recommend the Scrap Yard Hook. It has a .285" thick 7 3/8" long recurve blade of SR77 steel. This is a shock steel, modified S7. It is extremely tough. The Handle is Respirene C, which is shock absorbing and impervious to most chemicals, including DEET insect repellant. The sheath will cost a little extra. It is one heavy duty knife. They are in stock at Scrap Yard Knives now, and they are made by Dan Busse.
The Rangers are very good, too. The RD7 should satisfy your needs and the price is within your stated $100.They are 5160 steel with micarta handles and come with sheaths. Very nice heavy duty knives.
The Ontario Survival Bowie is an old favorite of mine, but its a little longer than you requested. It chops well and has a 1/4" thick 10" flat ground blade of 1095 steel. It is much lighter and easier to carry than the Ontario Marine Bowie. It has a Kraton handle and comes with a swing sheath for easy carry. You can get them for about $50 or so.
The Ontario RAT-7 in 1095 is another excellent choice in your price range.
