My roommate has decided he really wants a Karambit, and I feel personally obligated to make sure he doesn't buy a bad one. Karambit knives aren't quite my realm, and I recommended he look at the Fox Karambit in N690co. Do you guys have any to suggest? Aesthetic value is a dominant deciding factor in his purchase.

511 makes some.

I thought 511 used S30V...

Looks like it was discontinued.

5.11 made the Turani Tactical folding karambit in s30v

I picked one up when they were on sale for less the $50; nice knife, definitely better quality then most other 5.11's I've handled.
But without a doubt, had it not been for the sale price to sway me, I would've went with the Fox in n690 if the prices were more equivalent. The Fox has the wave feature which is especially handy in a karambit style knife for fast deployment of the blade.

Just my 2cents.

You're supposed to wave those.

tell him to save a bit more and get the emerson karambit, there is also the spyderco karambit

Tell him to save a bit more and you can look around on here. I own an emerson super k-bit and paid little over $150 here on the exchange, the thing was brand new too. Alternatively CM makes a good point, the 5.11 ones if you can find the older s30v can be waved and would be awesome.

Just saying what a Karambit is usually bought for, for self defense or SD training the choice of steel shouldn't matter very much. Way and speed of deployment, carry options/accessibility and concealability would be the overruling factors.

Of course if he actually uses it to cut things often, great for boxes, then the priorities change a bit.

Also take care of the finger ring size. I got the version from fox where they warned to only get it if you have huge hands. Well guess who had to file the opening bigger. Downside of buying things unseen from the web.

Cold Steel has one now. in CTS XHP.

Unfortunately the Cold Steel version is more like a hawkbill with a ring on the end rather than a true karambit, much less of a curve to the blade. Good knife, but a lot less karambit-esque than it could be.

Better than the fixed wharncliff! Karambit in Walmart :-O

They are in the middle of the aisle cardboard displays. Where they keep the new $4 G10 flippers. Somewhere around hunting and fishing and tools but not where they normally keep knives. Seems to be some seasonal item.
Santa's Claws in a way.

I've looked at every display they have in that area. My Walmart doesn't have anything like what you described. Or maybe they have them in back and haven't put them out yet, I dunno.

So far everybody could find at least these little guys here.

And in my Walmart the karambits where right next to it.
They were called sheep's foot adventure blade or something similar. Maybe the term Karambit is protected? Don't even remember the company. But the price was $20.

Oh I know all about the $4 knives, I have a few of them. They keep them in 3 different places at my Walmart(aisle display, spinner rack, end cap hanging display), but there's no adventure blade anywhere near any of them. There's a Kershaw gift set, some Camillus fixed blade, some 2 pack with a Peanut style knife and a Buck 110 knockoff, but that's it.

Hm maybe it's new and will be on display in a few in yours as well?
I wish I would have taken a picture but battery was low. Also don't go there so often. Next time I do I'll share.

Edit:
Searching wall mart and sheepsfoot this here came up www.walmart.com/ip/SOG-Specialty-Knives-and-Tools-Gambit-Sheepsfoot-Knife-with-Sheath/45910744
It looks like what I remember.
