I am still looking at various equipment and am having a great deal of trouble locating a variable speed belt grinder/sander that doesn't cost an arm and a leg...

I would think that it would be easy to install a potentiometer or something to vary the voltage to the motor of an existing machine?

Does someone sell a variable that is about $400 or less?

Thanks

You might want to check out Kalamazoo grinders. One of the major suppliers carries them Koval I think although it may be Sheffield. They sell it without a motor. Get a motor from wherever (I found mine in the basement I think it came from a washer) and set it up with a stepped pully for different speeds.
I am using this set up with a modified grizzly that a friend gave me when he got a Bader. It works great. Good luck!
