What were the reasons for the move away from the Luminox?

Brothers & Sisters of Wrist Chronometers,
ccdog et alia,

Take a look at:

http://www.tacticalforums.com/

Enter the U.S. Navy SEALs page and search for "SEAL Watches".

Wal-Mart Super Centers have the Casio's for about $89.95 or less.

[Moderators. Please note. I am not attempting to sell nor insinuate anything other than the offer of providing another poster an alternative source for considering their personal items. TY]

....TAG Heuers, while offending serious watch aficionados, are good watches...

If a "serious watch aficionado" is _offended_ by a TAG-Heuer, then he/she is merely a "watch snob" - and that's a whole different animal than a serious watch collector. Before I switched to collecting knives, my watch collection was worth about $350,000. retail (not a big deal among SERIOUS collectors). I still own a few Breguets, IWC's, Patek's,etc. each worth in excess of $20,000. So what's my favorite dress watch? A $200 sterling silver "tank" style watch sold as a "house brand" by a long-bankrupt carriage trade jewellery store in Toronto. THAT is my "best" watch.

Just my .02 (CDN, so actually worth nothing!)

As an update, I do appreciate all the input and ideas from you guyz. This week, the wife and I went to Reno, and yours truly won $ 1,850 without breaking a sweat. Since I don't really enjoy gambling, I stopped after that !!
Wanted to use some of the $$ for our rental car, etc. Found a New Omega Seamaster Chrono (Automatic) blue dial, blue bezel for $ 1,275, 30 % off of $ 1,750 at a local store. Absolutley love this watch !!

Thanks, Stinky

OK, i know the Luminox fans will hate me for saying this, but take away the tritium and you have a poorly made watch, an instrument watch wannabe.

Why do i say this? Easy, i had the fortune to closely examine several Luminox watches, about 5 different models, including their high end line, and they were not being sold by the same dealer. Each one had at least 2 significant flaws, something i cannot, as a true perfectionist tolerate on a relatively expensive watch.

First, each watch had 2 distinct problems with their second hands. First problem was that they did not hit the second markers as the hand stepped around the dial, in other words, the second hand never lined up with the second hand markers, not even close. This is unacceptable on a watch in this price range. If yours does, youre lucky.

Second, if the watch was shaken, not extremely hard either, you could actually see the minute hands move back and fourth about 3-5 minutes in either direction.

Finally, when you set the watch so that the minute hand hits the minute marker when the second hand hits the 12 oclock position, it would lose its place after a few minutes, and then, it would never line up properly again. As i said, these were about 10 DIFFERENT watches, one is their top of the line. So, in my experience, these watches have only a single thing to offer, and thats the tritium, and that just aint enough. Want a real instrument watch, go with a Sinn, or if you have the money, an IWC aquatimer. Even a seiko divers is superior in precision to the best Luminox watches at half the price.

I will give them one compliment though, i wish i could find a well made auto with tritium hands and indices as bright as the Luminox, Sinn used to make their watches with tritium, they are now using Super Luminova, which is bright, but not Tritium bright.

I say the above statements as someone who appreciates and has owned some fine watches, including, Rolex, Breitling, Omega, Sinn, several Baume and Merciers, Heuer Classics and others. And i am not a snob, one of my favorite watches is a Seiko Divers watch i paid $200 for. And it is FAR superior in fit, finish and function to the Luminox line. Hey, i was suckered in like everyone else, i bought 2 Luminox watches, i dont have them anymore, life is too short to wear a poorly made watch. Flame away. :)

FWIW i have had good luck w/these -

rolex GMT11 burgundy/black bezel, oyster band, all SS construction

seiko 200M divers watch, an automatic not quartz, day/date, i bought this new in about '80 and its been great - other than a few bands (LOL) no probs, i need to send it in and get it cleaned, never have in 20+ yrs - a helluva watch for $150 imho

TAG proffesional SS - a good watch, an entry level TAG, paid like $300 for it, a good lite watch, very comftrable, never any probs

panerai GMT - a BIG watch (44MM i think) w/a leather band, if ya dont know watches, ya prob dont know they cost about as much as a rolex, i got mine from a bud who bought it in kuwait when he was working for dyncorp, paid him exactly what he paid, i think it was $1400, and it was LNIB. a cool watch, my wife (5'3 118) wears it lol, looks funny on her, but she loves it......

and my dads rolex daytona, mid 60's model, he got it in about '69, still works great, could use a polish job though, but NEVER cleaned/etc, in over 30 yrs, and he wore it all the time, i think he paid about $450 for it, a lot of $$ in those days, but its worth a lot more than that now i think.......

i also have had bad luck w/luminox, they seem to last about a yr, then break in my experience - i have had one, and buds 2 more, none made it to 2 yrs w/out major probs.....

out of all of them, my fav, for everyday wear, is the GMT11
