I'm going to turn a knife into a trainer, so I want to completely dull the blade and soften the point. Any suggestions for the best approach?

You want it dulled and rusted?

Let your wife use it in the garden.

To make it safe enough for a trainer (in my opinion) you would need to grind the edge and point off. Depending on the primary grind of the blade, there may not be much left by the time it is done. I would suggest either buying a dedicated trainer or making a new blade out of sheet stock and drilling holes in it to lighten it to the correct weight.

In normal type uses old carpet remnants ding up the best edge right quick. Hemp rope after that should finish it out duller than butter knife.

I'll second yablanowitz.

Why not buy a Trainer? It would be safer.

just take a file and rake it across the edge and point. Or, since you probably aren't ever going to use it as a real knife again, just take it to a grinding wheel. You'll ruin the heat treatment, but who cares in this instance?

As mentioned before, if it's a thin grind you may be better off making a trainer blade instead, since you'd need to make the edge thick enough not to do a number on anyone. What model are you doing this with?

Unfortunately I don't have access to a grinder, which is why I'm putting the question to the forum.

I'm thinking about doing this to a CS Laredo in SK-5, that will be my trainer for the San Mai version I keep. Yes, it's a shame to do it to a nice blade like the SK-5 Laredo, but it will be a perfect trainer in terms of weight and size, and of course the handle, all of which would be sub-optimal in a regular trainer. In terms of price it only comes out to just over double the cost of custom trainer, since I got a great deal on the SK-5 Laredo.

So far I'm thinking about using a file on the chisel grind and sandpaper to put a nice smooth, dull edge on it.

why not make a wooden knife instead. it would be a lot safer than a dull knife. you could also have someone make a couple of trainers out of soft stainless to your specs.

What sort of wood would you recommend if I was to go this route?

some hard wood like maple, oak, hickory, ash. a lumber yard or sawmill might have some scrap. a friend of mine has a sawmill with a bunch of scrap hardwood.

Some good ideas here, thanks guys. I think I'll spare the SK-5 Laredo (for now) and just make it a hard use knife to really get the feel of it, and use it to carve myself a nice wooden trainer of the same design.

Cheers.

If after that you still want to dull it walk out your front door and stab it into the ground until it is as dull as you want it.

orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

buy a block of wood.. carve out a trainer knife with ur SK-5 and u'll have a dull knife + a trainer wood knife :)

I am a LEO trainer and we use these for training blades...they are made from a semi stiff rubber and as long as eye protection is used they are extremely safe.

They cost about 9 bucks and are available from http://www.knifecenter.com/
