Best way to prevent d2 from rusting?

Not to pik, but because a lot of people might try this thought I'd just mention: technically I think that oil has to be from the bridge (top) of your nose to qualify. It has to come through cartilage to be nasal sebum, the substance that works like that. It will preserve steel edges. Not sure oil off the side of the nose will do it.

Maybe a doc or someone can confirm that. I'd like to be wrong.

To be more specific; Dad rubbed his fishing rods just beside the nostril where the nose meets the cheek. I think that's the sweet spot as it is very oily.

EDIT to add:
Again, this was used to keep two part fishing rods from locking together and to aid in their later separation.
I don't know its effectiveness against rust of corrosion.

Nu Finish !   :thumbup:Thought I was the only one who knew that secret.

Orange bottle, you're using the 'polish' like me. The wax comes in a tin. The polish is better. Best stuff ever for the cars. I use it on my blades too.

Is this what your talking about?

I have a few expensive knives on the way both with d2. This will be my first experience with d2. I know its not a stainless and can rust. I usually dont buy any steel that isnt stainless because i hate when my blades rust. But these 2 knives were must haves. Can anyone give me a few good tips on how to prevent rusting?

Here is a recent thread on the topic with suggestions and comments. It might be of some interest and value.

I lube with Break Free CLP and store in small Ziplock Freezer bags. It is the same lube I use on very expensive and rare Browning shotguns and other firearms.

Here is some good info about corrosion protection product testing.

I don't have enough oils and greases in the interstices of my nose to cover a gun so I use the synthetic Break Free CLP for them and my knives.

Depending on the humidity, oil it once a week to once a month and don't keep it in and leather sheaths.
If its a knife that you use/carry I'd just take a dab of olive oil on your finger and wipe the blade down when you get home. Its become a ritual right before I cook dinner.

Good info. You don't want to store knives or guns in sheaths, except perhaps ballistic nylon ones. Leather sheaths will definitely cause issues.

i also use gun oil like remoil seems to get into the steel or if need a little cleaning nitro clp or the like...jeff

I store all of my knives dry, and the only time I rusted D2 was when I forgot to clean off a knife after butchering a hog. Hog's blood will develop rust spots on D2 overnight. I wiped them off with very little effort, and haven't had a problem since. Unless you are exposing them to a salty and humid environment, I really doubt you will have a problem.

Eezox. 'Nuf said.

I've always liked using Sentry Solutions Tuf-Glide and Tuf-Cloth for rust prevention because it works, it's non toxic, and doesn't leave an oily/sticky residue on the blade.

Ive been using that EDCi cleaner on my blades for a while. I live near water so the air is pretty moist. I have a few D2 blades that were showing a little rust, i rubbed out the spots and since using this cleaner they haven't come back. Aegis solutions are the guys that make it i think. Food safe too.
