Best way to remove paint?

I just picked up a forged hatchet that has grey paint on the head. I don't want to sand off the forge marks. I don't want to have to remove the head to soak it in something. What would be the best way to get the paint off? Is sanding my best option?

Without removing it or soaking probably light sanding or a wire wheel..Sandblasting if you can..or maybe a heat gun but dont get the edge much over 450*

If it indeed is paint the best way to remove it without damaging or removing the marks would be to bead blast the head with plastic beads.

Thanks for the great tips! I think I may try rubbing some paint remover on with a rag before I look into some form of blasting. I only paid $30 for the hatchet. I'd hate to double the cost just to remove the paint.

Paint remover will not hurt the steel or the surface and will get the paint off.

i like the wire wheel. if you use brass it wont scuff up the steel too much and i like the finish it leaves. i use a wire wheel on everything i forge and it removes paint quite well. i used it on all my cold steel stuff.

If you find that the remover isn't giving you the results you are looking for I would be more than happy to help you out:)

Wow, that's an awesome offer! I'm going to try the paint remover tonight and I'll post some pics since we all like looking at sharp metal.

For my Cold Steel hawks, I used a heavy-duty outdoor paint remover goop. Just apply, let stand, and wash off. Absolutely no elbow grease involved and no damage to the bit.
