i dont think a sharpmaker would work and doing it with a stone would take quite and you would have problems keeping it even. i use a belt sander to sharpen a convex edge. you can do it by hand with sandpaper and a soft backing with some give. to finish off the edge i use paper wheels. the knife vid in my sig line was done on a belt sander and finished off with the paper wheels.
I've found that freehand sharpening with diamond stones and sandpaper works just fine on convex edges. You just have to pay attention to keeping everything even, but it's actually pretty easy. At least, on smaller blades.
This is the setup I use to sharpen my convex knives. Mostly, I start at 1500 or 2000, then strop on white, then green, or one or the other. About the only time I move down into the lower grits is when the knife is getting dull or there are knicks to take care of. Light pressure, low angle, repetition. Same with the strops.
I think they are the definitive videos on the subject. The author uses a 2x4 to explain and demonstrate the methodology behind sharpening them. I was impressed.
