best way to sharpen machax?

I've this 8" ceramic rod from a high pressure sodium light buld I have been using, it's probably 2000 grit so it takes a while if I let it go too long. I still haven't gotten the edge where I want it though.
 
Good info there wd, thanks! I've free handed my 4 on the WS, but I was eyeballing the 50 deg guide because of the hard use I'm putting the 4 through, but truthfully I'm afraid of the guides for the reasons you gave.
