My first real folders should arrive tomorrow :D... a Delica 4 FRN CE and a Dragonfly SS PE. Are there any certain things you like to do when you first get a new folder (to break-in or protect/condition or anything else)? Thanks!!

I like to adjust the knife to fit my needs, oil it with a lubcricant, open and close it like 30 times afterwards and that's about it.

I check mine for blade centering and lock dependability, but that's it. I don't do any adjusting until I've used the knife for a while since most of them will settle in with a few weeks' use.

Spydercos come pretty well lubed from the factory. Unless yours has been sitting in inventory for some time, it should be good to go.

Uh... I guess not. Just grab it, carry it and use it... that is what knives are for!. Maybe you want to wipe the blade to get rid of any protective lubrican in case you intend to cut food with it. I am sure Spyderco don't use toxic lubricants anyway.

I like to test the sharpness by cutting paper, and if it is not as sharpened as I want, I sharpen it a bit. (most spydercos come really sharp from factory though)

I've never had to do any knife maintenance adjustments on a new Spydie out of the box. In time, the knife will wear in a bit and pretty much self-polish all the moving surfaces. It'll get even smoother than it currently is.

Historically speaking, you should slay one of those pesky dragons. Then, it's considered broken in right.

But, in modern days, I'd say just use it a lot. Remember if you don't give your knives something to feed on, they will turn on their owner...usually when you're sharpening them.

Pound on it with a sledge hammer, cut wire with it and throw it into the concrete a few times. Or you could let your knife break-in all by it's self. Enjoy your new knife!

Cool... they arrived about a half hour ago, and were both nice and smooth from the get-go. Looks like they both had a bit of oil already in the pivot, so I've been handling and opening, closing, shredding paper and looking for excuses to cut stuff!! My main interest is the Delica (the Dragonfly was kind of a bonus), and I'm VERY happy so far... perfect size, surprisingly light, very smooth action, no play in any direction, shaving sharp out of the box. I might find that I prefer a plain edge rather than combo, but a guy at the knife store I've dropped into a couple times said that Spyderco is known for their serrations, so I thought I'd give the combo a shot... besides, if it's true what everyone on the various forums say, these two probably won't be my last!!

OK... I'm off to look for one of them there dragons! Hmmm... I hope it's OK if I hit him with the Delica first?!?

Yeah, few people get past their first Spyderco knives without the PPS (Peter Parker Syndrome). I got bitten myself, and it's hard not to buy other Spydercos after that. And after those other ones too, and after...
Welcome among the Spyderco fans!

(BTW, if you can't resist buying other Spydercos, I suggest one form of Caly, maybe Caly III, Calypso Jr or UKPK)
