In your opionion/experience which is the best made and highest quality Spyderco folder in current production?

Here I'm thinking of design, materials, workmanship...emphasis on quality. Not necessarily which is the best EDC or best for a particular task. The knife we EDC most may not be the nicest one we own (I'd say frequently is isn't). Maybe a simpler way is to say which is the top of the line, recognizing that price alone doesn't always indicate that.

Hopefully these qualities might appear in one item or does it take more than one?

That is a really difficult question to apply to Spyderco as a brand, partially because knives made in the different manufacturing locations (USA, Japan, Taiwan, etc) tend to have their own idiosyncrasies and different users like different things.

What attributes do you look for when you want quality? Smooth action? Absolutely no blade play? Tight tolerances, detailed fit and finish? Do you just care about the quality of the materials and construction?

Impossible question to answer, but here's a good place to begin your search: Sage 2

That question is a toughie. Sort of like asking which is the best guitar, or motorcycle.

I'm going with CF Stretch for current production. If the Manix 2 in FFG S90V was current production I would have prob'ly chose it instead.

1) Military - Hands down
2) Gayle Bradley or Paramilitary (you pick)
3) Paramilitary or Gayle Bradley (you pick)
4) Sage 1 or 2 (you pick)
5) Manix 2 S90V

I'll stop now or I'll be typing all night :D

Poliwog in Stainless.

Perhaps the P'kal.

Maybe it's just me but I like the high tech ball locks compared to conventional linerlocks or conventional framelocks.

I am wondering if the M4 Military will be it?

Honestly, the stoutness of the M4 with a RIL, but the G10 on the opposite should keep the weight down. Nice blade size and grind....yeah, I am thinking this one could easily be the best.

I recognize it is not an easy question. I was trying to avoid the usual "what is your favorite" list. Personal taste plays a huge part. BUT, top quality in anything tends to stand out. For example, I would never buy a Ferrari, but I recognize the quality.
The idiosyncrasies are partly what motivated the question, since I can't buy every Spyderco and oddly and amazingly a city as large as Atlanta doesn't have a single decent store to even handle them.

To be at the top of a quality list there definitely should be no blade play, smooth action, good detent, excellent fit and finish. Internal and external materials should reflect the quality.

From what I can tell, the new Gayle Bradley seems a likely contender for the top spot.

Thanks! I hate to bore folks with easy questions. :)

Yes just "best" is hard. Best for what? You'd have to define intended use. For motorcycles you'd get into fastest, most rugged..would depend on if your talking flat racing, doing trials, or mountain racing.

But best QUALITY...guess I should say overall quality. Might be easier.
