I'm giving some steel to a forum pal for a wedding gift. He's even newer than I am to the knifemaking game :o

Anyway, he wants to make a tanto-style knife with a hamon or temper line. I have 1080 and O1 I can send him; which do y'all suggest?

I already told him that O1 (from what little I know about HT) should probably be sent to a pro for that.

This guy is a bit of a goofball, but he's good people and also happens to be an Iraq vet. Help me give him good advise. :)

Thanks!

1080 will show a much better hamon than O1, unless you edge quench the O1 to get sort of a similar effect, but you'll get more activity with the 1080.
