Better Lock...Para Mil or Military

I like the compression lock better because it can be easily closed one handed. When you disengage a liner lock your fingers are in the way of blade which is not the case with compression lock. I think spyderco should focus more on the compression lock. You can get liner locks, lock backs, and RIL from other makers but the compression lock is Spyderco exclusive as far as I know.

Prefer the liner lock for easy closing, but the comp lock is stronger.

Both are plenty strong for my needs.

I like the simplicity of the liner lock on the Military. I've handled a Paramilitary and thought the lever on the compression lock was rather large and convoluted in comparison. No doubt the end result is strong, but I prefer the short, clean, simple operation of the liner lock on the Military. I try not to go nuts with folders anyway, that's what fixed blades are for.

IIRC, Sal has stated that they haven't gotten a liner lock (possibly also a frame lock) to qualify for an MBC/extra heavy duty lock rating. The compression lock does, as well as the BBL, and sufficient lockbacks.

All great replies. I was just wondering why they picked different locks for the same knife series.. and which one is a superior or stronger lock

i don't think i would call them belonging to the same series, although the names are similar.

spyderco has always seemed to be on the cutting edge, so to speak, regarding materials and lock systems.

as mentioned, the compression will require greater force to induce failure, but this does not make it superior, necessarily. personal preference plays a large part.

personally, i love the compression lock, and im anxiously awaiting the para 2 with tip up carry options.

Yeah, a lot of folks think Frame locks are stronger than they really are. Strength is not their best feature though. Many times liner locks are actually stronger. How much strength can a frame lock have with deep lock cuts taking the material down so thin in the back of the locks? Answer, not much. The question is though, when is it strong enough to suffice in most uses and obviously it does that well. Things can be done to increase the strength of both types of locks either liner or frame if one wanted to do them. Some have taken steps in the right direction already to enhance some areas such as, thicker relief areas left on the frame or taper grinds to allow greater thickness than taking it down uniformly, lock stabalizers, and reinforced frame structures to name some. Still these type locks will never be the strength level of other lock types thats for sure. Overall though strength is just one aspect of what is needed in a handy tool for cutting tasks. I feel the frame lock suffices for most hard use tactical jobs a folder runs into and fits well in the ability range for strength, reliability and convenience as well as simplistic problem free design. A frame lock compression style lock on the Para-Military would certainly be something I'd buy though as it offers all that too!

The compression lock is better all around. It's stronger and less likely to fail like liner locks do when inproperly used. Plus it can be actuated opened and closed with one hand much like an axis lock.

The reason the compression isn't used more is because there is a high degree of difficultly involved in properly manufacturing the lock, or so I heard.

This is not me, but it shows how easily the compression lock can be used.

the comp lock is stronger, however I prefer the liner lock of the Millie simply because of the zero bladeplay factor: none of my 6 Millies has play, while both by Paras exhibit some vertical bladeplay: just a tiny bit on my D2, quite a bit on my digi camo
now don't get me wrong: I fully trust the lock, but that tiny amount of vertical play does get to me from time to time :)

i really like the compression lock on my paramilitary, but that said i have handled militaries and they are rock solid. they are both good just different ;)
