Better than INFI?

Just wondering (because I live where I live I have no show pics, anecdotes, jokes etc. etc. :grumpy:) Do you think Jerry is working away on a new steel, or INFI variation? Like I'm sure the guy who invented white bread thought he was the cats whiskers till someone showed him white sliced bread :D or the guy that invented tv thought he was the s**t till someone else said "black and white tv blows, heres colour" I dont think Jerry is the sort of guy to rest on his laurels  and Busse seems to be a company that keeps getting better and better , so I suspect steel improvements is right up there with blade designs. What do you guys think?

From experience using my own and from others here, I don't really think INFI needs any improvement.
"If it's not broken, don't fix it" is my thought.

I think it is possible, but INFI is still yards ahead of most other steels for the application of the knives.

 I AM IN NO WAY SAYING INFI NEEDS IMPROVING. I am just asking whether you guys think Jerry is working on new steels. He came out with INFI, who are we to say that HE cant top that.

I bet he is.

He has switches steels several times. I bet if he found something promising, he would be all over testing, and if it proves better, he would do it in a flash. Then Scrap Yard could have all the left over infi.

I should have clarified ... Jerry seems to bring us what we want and I don't hear any desire for a new version of INFI.
Maybe there's been some tweaking over the years already that is unknown to customers?

If I had to bet money on it, I would say he's working on it now. He is always looking for the best, and if a steel could be developed that performed better than INFI, I'm sure he would switch right over to it.

Since the premiere of INFI, we know that he changed from the hardness of the first versions of INFI to the hardness he commonly uses, today. We also know that he has sometimes made specific releases different hardnesses for different applications.

Further, we know that he's also made Modified INFI for the basics series, and he's brought out SR101 and SR77.

It looks to me like he is constantly trying new tweaks, new tempering protocols, new variations in elemental composition, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if the INFI we know today is not quite the same as the INFI that premiered in the SHBM 10 years ago; but similar enough that he kept the name. I also wouldn't be surprised if he eventually comes up with, and releases, something substantially better than INFI.

Any steel/HT would benefit from improvement. I'm sure that if any of the characteristics of INFI could be improved without simultaneously decreasing the rest, Jerry would do it. I see no reason why he wouldn't.

There are rumors of a top secret Busse R&D cabin in the Idaho mountains only reachable by prop plane on a dirt runway. If he's working on a new steel that would be where to find it.

Given that "INFI" Means What ever The Busse Combat Knife Company wants it to mean at the Moment.

I expect that The Company with do the best it can with what ever it has to work with at that particular moment in time.

Maybe now they're starting to get the bugs ironed out of the hadron collider Jerry can book some time in it for a special batch of super dense INFI.

It seems it is supposed to be the best at just about everything, what categories could it use an improvement in to give a substantial performance increase?

not so, if the patent is to be legally upheld. while infi is a brand name for jerry's creation that is under copyright, it is also a specific steel composition (so commonly compared to a8 in it's %'s). if the formula were to be changed and introduced without following the patented formula it would be up for grabs by any steel manufacturer or knife company that requested the specific formula be made. It would be a legal battle to keep the formula in jerry's name and ownership once it was being produced by other manufacturers.

I would not be surprised if the accompanying heat treatment and machining protocol is substantially different then what was being done in 1992, if only because of the addition of those newer fadal machining centers we see in the recent shop photo's. I think that jerry actively entertains and tests new tweaks to his heat treating protocol, but I believe that the fundamental infi that we have today will remain in it's current state indefinitely until a new steel composition is formulated and patented. until then we will see slight percentage point gains in performance that any normal user wouldn't really be able to quantify in field use.

I do think that jerry and the busse kin actively seek out other steels and test methods of making them better, as seen with the modification of 52100 for sr101 and s7 for sr77, as well as the proprietary heat treat for s30v and 154cm. we may not see a new "from the ground up" steel like infi, but we will certainly see new and novel approaches to other steels.

We're always looking, but so far, never finding. . .

Until some other steel can outperform INFI in all of the tests that we have done "LIVE". . . I won't have anything else to consider. . . . . .

We are working on some INFI Damascus for the Custom Shop. . . . That project is progressing VERY slowly. . .

Fret not my friends. . . we'll keep drinking until something comes up!!!!

Jerry :D
