Better than INFI?

I think we're looking at history here... looks to me like ron_m80 just named Jerry's next metal offering... if the Busse family approves :)

I second the INFImascus name!

INFImascus would be interesting if Jerry could use the Damascus process to improve the performance of Infi in the same way damascus is used by Hattori and Itou in Japan to do so.

They basically take a high carbon steel like Cowry X or R2 and use this for an inner sandwich to the damascus...giving it a high Rc treatment of Rc 62....this enables edge retention to be excellent...then using a multiple layer composite of a damascus make up they coat the sides of the blade in softer steel to give the flexibility and lateral strength we associate with Infi...

These two steels in damascus form are the only ones I have that can outperform on edge retention Infi in the smaller 5-6 inch blade knives....probably down to a mix of higher Rc setting and the grind of the hamaguri-ba convex edge similar to that developed for Samauri swords...however to do this process the steel is "forged"...and I am not sure that would work with Busse as they outsource the provision of Infi stock and then grind it...

However the ability to blend a higher Rc Infi blade with other steels to retain lateral flexibility and strength and give the beauty of a damascus blade is very interesting.

Having a FSH from the custom shop which could like like this....

now that would be cool...

Well IMO if it ain't broke don't fix it. :D

My thinking exactly. It took a lot of work for Jerry to develop an alloy and process that had the all-around performance he wanted in a knife steel. I'd rather he work on finding a way to make INFI cheaper!:D

Well I don't see how damascus Infi would make normal Infi more expensive......

It might free up more Infi for Dan....my favourite small Infi knife is my S5LE....

A damascuss blade would cause me to lose my girlfriend and quite possibly, go into forclosure...

We're always looking, but so far, never finding. . .

Until some other steel can outperform INFI in all of the tests that we have done "LIVE". . . I won't have anything else to consider. . . . . .

We are working on some INFI Damascus for the Custom Shop. . . . That project is progressing VERY slowly. . .

Fret not my friends. . . we'll keep drinking until something comes up!!!!

Jerry :D

You keep coming up with new way to make these piglets start dribbling mate.

Just out of curiosity... I'm just thinking in hypotheticals here... since I'm guessing that there's a very specific heat-treat for INFI and supposing that the second metal in the theoretical INFImascus were to require a very different heat treatment, how would that be accomplished considering that the two metals are sandwiched together? Or is there some process I'm entirely unaware of that would take care of said problem? Or is it just currently impossible?

I can probably take some time to do some beta testing for you!! :D

when i saw the D-tests on FFBM, i was shocked !
Jerry, you are the man.
i admire you .
but i wandering that if you can lower the hardness a little bit ,can get more strength , it is useful , especially to making long swords !
i am naive ,man.

Jerry is a pioneer. He has the same spirit as many of the iconic inventors. He'll never stop in his quest for the best steel for different applications. In addition to that, he is a knife maker.
