Better Weapon: Becker BK9 or Kaybar Heavy Bowie

When was the last time somebody used a gladius in a self defense situation? You are missing the point - big time. Do you think most hand to hand combat happens in a big open field? How old are you? 14?

:jerkit: The gladius isn't the point just an example of a big blade that can be used up close. You don't think a knife like the kabar heavy bowie can be used in any situation you mentioned? I didn't mean that hand to hand combat happens in an open field just that the bigger the weapon the more devestating but of course you mention the limitation in some extreme examples to prove your point. Your not a ninja or a video game character don't act like your going to grab a little knife and go to town doing backflips and other nonsense.

Here's the problem dude, most combat knives in the last 100 years have been smaller. There's a reason for that. It's not a primary weapon, it's a tool. If you want to carry your big ugly bowie around because bigger makes you feel safer, that's fine. You may not have skills that allow you to be efficient with a smaller knife, I don't know. My primary practice is Japanese fencing. For me, my best weapon is going to be a Katana. After that, Wakizashi. The Tanto is simply an after thought, because it's a tool. But I have trained in using that Tanto to fight against someone with a sword. A rifle takes the place of the Katana, a handgun the wakizashi, and the last tool is the same. The OP admitted he has guns for this purpose. Falling into place yet? Why carry a bigger knife/sword when you already have a gun? He asked for combat use, and most of us agreed that a lighter knife is better suited, but gave an answer to his question.

I know better than to hit enter, but I accept the consequences.

I know that but how is that relevant? My point was that I think a bigger, meaner blade is the better weapon.. is it the most practical? No. Is it needed? Maybe or maybe not. Is it needed if you have a gun already? maybe or maybe not. Come on dude surely someone like you who has actually trained with big blades would know they are the better WEAPON. I was never talking about the tool aspect and the thread starter wasn't asking about that either. Why bring other things into the argument? Do you just want to show me up?
